My weight gain so far...I'm curious...

Okay, so I have a question on the dreaded WEIGHT GAIN issue during pregnancy!

I am 23 weeks and have gained just about 20 pounds. The belly is definately there, ofcourse, but the rest of my body doesn't appear to have taken on any of the pounds, or, extemely minimal at worst. To me, atleast, I do not look pregnant from the rear view either. My doc told me I should gain 20-25 total pounds. If I have gained 20 already but don't feel like I've gotten FAT at all, how is just 20-25 total pounds even possible?? Or do you think some of this "extra" weight gain is muscle created compliments of Cathe? (I didn't start using Cathe until I was pregnant already-had been using the Firm.)

I'm just curious because regardless of what the scale says I am very pleased with the way I look....Never thought I would be!:)

Have a great work out!

Talk to the doctor, but go with your instict. Most people do gain closer to 30 with a pregnancy so your doctor's numbers are low. If you feel you are gaining just pregnancy weight don't worry.

I didn't gain anything the entire first trimester and started to worry. The doctor said not to worry about my weight, as long as the ultrasounds showed that the baby was growing, that's all that matters. Also my uterus is measuring the correct size so I think the weight thing is personal.

If the doctor says the baby is ok, then ignore the scale and just go with the flow.

I agree you shouldn't worry. My weight gain was all in my tummy too, and as it turns out I think a lot of it was umbilical cord! :) It was very fat and long. I lost the weight really fast too. Everybody's different and if you are happy with the way you are gaining, stay happy!

Take care,
Dana

Personally, I can't seem to build muscle when pregnant. Not that I am (with 2nd) or did (with 1st) really try. But I feel like my strenght suffers when pregnant and it takes longer for me to recover. I gained 30 with 1st pregancy and also looked non-pregnant from behind.

Maybe the weight gain varies based on the baby's gender? With my girl last time, I gained 44 pounds and looked like a balloon from the Macy's parade. Most of it was swelling or bloating and I returned to my pre-pregnancy weight of 120 in 12 weeks. This time, with my BOY(!), I have only gained 10 so far and I'm 20 weeks along. So I think I still look pretty good, and I don't have any swelling yet. And the baby has measured right on target with his gestational age.
I can't take credit for these differences- my workouts are minimal at best, especially this time around with working FT and having our little 1.5 year old. So maybe it is the gender- girls make you puffier? And with boys you just gain in the belly- any thoughts?

Isn't there an old wives tale about this? I gained 44 pounds with my DD and 47 with my DS. So I was the opposite.

Yes, one of the old wives tales of how to tell gender is based on how you gain weight during pregnancy...I don't know that it's just a wives tale though coz it seems to ring true more often than not. I am having a boy and although 20 pounds at 23 weeks seems like a lot to me, it really is all in my belly! They say if you are having a girl you tend to gain weight all over...and I know that rings true lots of times too....seems you are a perfect example that there may be some truth to the old "wives tale"!

I just can't believe my doc said only 20-25 total! It blows my mind but I'm not gonna worry coz I look pregnant, not overweight.:D

Have a great work out!

Just to let you know..I gained 25 pounds with my son(he was 1st born) and 65 pounds with my daughter. I don't know if it's a girl thing or what, but it was mostly all water with her. Don't worry about it. As long as the baby is healthy that's all that really counts. You will have plenty of Cathe time after the baby is born to lose whatever weight you gain!

Aila:)

p.s. don't listen to your doctor..everybody carries differently. My dr. use to tell me that too. I think the normal is 25-45 pounds from what I understand

Hi Wendy,

I won't extol my long-winded opinion on this yet again, as I'm sure you've heard it enough already :) But I just wanted to mention that it sounds like your doc is using outdated guidelines?? When I was pg with DD#1, 5 years ago, everything I read or heard from a doctor stated 25-35 as the typical weight gain. My mother, and other women having babies 30-40 years ago, have told me that in their day, the guidelines were 15-25 pounds (!).

At any rate, there's no point in stewing over it, is there? It's not like you can realistically do anything about it! You're already exercising and eating appropriately; what more can you or your doctor reasonably ask of yourself?

Sandra

Well, I never claimed to be eating properly! :p }(

Actually, I have just loosened my habits a bit so as not to be so strict...unfortunately though, this will sometimes send me off on a binge of eating all of those "goodies" I had previously cut out of my diet almost completely! OOPS! But the baby wants it so I have to eat it! Can't deprive my little boy, now can I? lol ;)

Have a great work out!

This is only my opinion... I've cared for a number of OB patients and I from a medical perspective I don't think those wives tales (heart rates, caring high or low, etc.) hold true. But, then again, I have a friend who is more accurate than ultrasound with her pencil, needle, and thread. :) She has never been wrong... no joking. Maybe some women have that intution thing.

Recommended weight gain varies. The most common recommendations are:
underweight 28-40 pounds
normal weigth 25-35 pounds
overweight 15-25 pounds
obese 15 pounds

The first half of pregnancy is primarily maternal weight gain and the second half is primarily baby. Here is an approximate breakdown of the components weight gain:
extra fat stores 4-6 #s
extra tissue fluid 3-6 #s
extra blood 4-5 #s
breast tissue 1-4 #s
placenta 2 #s
amniotic fluid 2 #s
baby 6-8 #s
extra unerine tissue 2-3 #s

I agree with others, these are recommendations. If you are eating a heathful diet of whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean dairy and meats (or soy) and exercising, your body will gain the appropriate amount for you and your pregnancy. There is real concern for weight gain below or above the recommendations... it should alert your health care professional to assess the weight gain... but it doesn't always indicate a problem.

Wendy and you other pregnant ladies, I think you should take belly pics (and share them :). I didn't take any with my DD, I just kept thinking I'll do that tomorrow. I have some precious ones of my DD and my belly from this last pregnancy.

Take care ladies!

Wendy,

You sound like me when I was pregnant... eating for the baby... I was REALLY NAUGHTY though... "But Matt (my DH), I had to eat the whole Double Chocolate Gooey Butter cake... OUR lil' boy wanted it... it wasn't me". ;)

I know I am an "old" mom now, but I'll even start a thread and share my pics (mainly 'cause Sydney is so beautiful and her beauty should be shared :)). It may take me a little time though.

I love the idea of belly pictures. Unfortunately I don't have any from my 1st pregnancy, but I plan to take some with this one. You all will just need to wait a while to see any. LOL

When I was pregnant with DS I gained 40 pounds. (I was at a normal weight to begin with.) I was borderline for Gestational Diabetes throughout the pregnancy. My doctor induced me on my due date out of fear that my DS would be too big to deliver vaginally. She was never concerned with the 40 pounds I had gained. Hopefully this time around I will only gain about 30, but what will happen will happen. I feel the same way as others who have said that 20-25 pounds sounds kinda low and outdated. However my sales manager's wife, who was normal weight, only gained 14 pounds while pregnant with her second child. How is that possible? I think that ultimately your body decides what it needs to help the baby grow.

"I think that ultimately your body decides what it needs to help the baby grow."

I agree, Kristi-if you are not eating an excessive amount or doing anything extreme that will affect your weight in some extraordinary way-your body probably just automatically does whatever is neccessary to create the perfect environment for your little one to grow in... Wow-I gave myself a chill! What a great feeling-being pregnant is wonderful!:)

Have a great work out!
