My Uncle is visiting from Texas, I have seen him only 3 times probably my whole life. I am enjoying his visit very much, he has all these wonderful stories.
When he was a Junior in high school he was on the Varsity Basketball team they went far in the state finals that year and had a lot of potential the following year. His father was in the army at the time and had to move down to Georgia. He had the coach, teachers, principal, and families all beg him to let Fred stay. He wouldn't have to pay anything, they would take care of everything. He was the oldest of 6, and his father being an army guy was potentially not around much, so it just wasn't practical. His mom needed the help.
He gets to Richland Hill Georgia, and on his first day of school discovers there is no Basketball team. There is not baseball, football, or soccer.
I just can't imagine how devastating that was. He goes home and tells his father that "they haven't got nothin here." And, he's just crushed and his father just says "Well, than you just start one up." He then proceeds to start a Basketball team, the school had 40 students. The team had 4 seniors and 5 juniors/sophmores. He was their coach. He organized all the games, and taught these boys how to play ball. They played all over the state and did well they went all the way up through to the finals.
The following year the school hired a coach and built a court (they had been using a converted tennis court). Sense then Richland Hills has always had a Basketball team.
Isn't that a wonderful story? I hope you all think it's worth reading. I'm not doing it justice, I'm not a writer. I just had a wonderful visit with him and thought you all might find it interesting.
