My story and my goal:

I am 36 years old, 5'4",weigh 190 lbs, and have no energy! I have a goal to be well on my way to a healthier more vibrant ME by the time my husband comes home from Iraq in August. About 3 years ago, I got down to a fit and trim size 8, by working out hard and a healthy diet. After a move, I went right back to my bad habits.
Tomorrow my goal is to get an exercise area ready in the basement. I already have weights and a step. I have a gym membership, but just started a new job and with my daughter's softball season, the timing to get to that gym is not easy.
I have pretty good muscle tone, but alot of fat.
Please give advice on a selection of Cathe's DVD's to begin with. I am an experienced stepper just very out of shape.
My one concern is arthritis in the neck. I feel that strengthening my abs and back will be beneficial to my neck.
I am a stress eater and with my husband in Iraq, I am under a great deal of stress and anxiety. I need to get to working out and not in front of the TV watching the news!
I'd dearly appreciate any motivation and prayers you can provide.

Thank you,
Melissa

Melissa:

Congratulations on your decision to get fit! I, too, am 36 years old, at 5'2" and 140, I have really great muscle tone hiding beneath too much fat. Do you have any Cathe workouts already? If not, I think Rhythmic Step and Step Blast are two great step workouts for an experienced stepper. They're both lots of fun. A great weight workout is the Pure Strength series. Very basic, but stands the test of time and targets all areas. For me, lower body is a big issue, and Legs & Glutes seems to be hitting that area in new and painful (but effective) ways.

Stress eating is tough to control. I find that sometimes I have to give in to it. I want to pop something in my mouth over and over. I'll keep frozen peas in the freezer for moments like this. I can sit with a cup of them, and they take a long time to eat, and they're a little bit sweet. Don't get me wrong, it's not chocolate, but it beats trying to conquer the habit. You just replace it with something less detrimental.

I wish you lots of luck. If you ever need support, a friend, etc., feel free to send me a message. You'll find that everyone on these forums are great support and share your goals while rooting you on. God bless!

Hi there Melissa,

I don't have any of Cathe's DVDs, only videos. I really love MIC, Imax, Body Max, Pure Strength series, Legs and Glutes, and Power Hour. Her older step tapes are really a lot of fun too.

I've only been doing her workouts since the beginning of the year but I see a difference and feel great. These boards have alot of experienced people with lots of great advice.

I wish your husband a safe return.:)

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to the boards. I like the way you stated your goal and think seeing your husband again will be great motivation. How long has he been deployed?

I unfortunately don't have any of Cathe's step workouts- no room for a step. I highly recommend Pure Strength also. Great workout! As far as I know, just about all of the workouts end with an ab routine, so you have a lot of choices for working your core.

I wish I had some advice about stress eating! Sometimes, I give in, but I usually try to distract myself first. Take a nap, watch a movie, read a book, read these boards lol.

Good luck!

Gina

Hi Melissa, My prayers are with you and your faimly. I'd like to help motivate you, as far as Cathes step workouts go anyways. I'm new here too. I got my first Cathe workout in the beginning of Feb. Cardio hits, which is powermax/stepfit/stepworks. WOW, did those tapes get me started and feeling awesome! This forum isn't lying when they say how great Cathe is. These workouts are all just about an hour. But heres the thing, you never notice the time. Her coreography and cuing is so right on, the time flys. And there really is a fun factor. I find myself smiling on quite a few of the sections. Alot of people here recommend the other step dvd, i cant remember the name but it has stepjam and step heat. They say the coreography is a bit easier. I don't know, I didn't have alot of trouble picking up the moves in cardio hits (i previewed and practiced for about two days) I hope some of this helps, and wish you all the best! Carolyn

Hi Melissa!! My heart and prayers go out to you. I can't even begin to imagine the stress you must be under. BUT I do know what stress eating is all about.......I'm the queen of stress eating!! I am 38, 5'4", and weigh about 195. I am FINALLY out of the 200's!! It took finding the right depression medication and as of recently a "diet" that I can stick to. My weight started to soar when I was going through my divorce and it kept on creeping up on me. I think being alone alot has something to do with it, and I lost all motivation. I do have almost all of Cathe's videos/dvds, but there are also alot I have not even used yet. I have, however, done the PS series in the past and it did nice things for me. As far as cardio goes, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Step Heat. That's the one I always start back with. Since I'm just getting back on the bandwagon, I would love to keep in check with you, if you would like. Sounds like we are both close to the same starting point. Oh, I should also mention that Cardio and Weights is a fun circuit training workout. The music is awesome and keeps you pumped!!

Melissa - like all of the other posters, my heart goes out to you as you cope with your husband's deployment in Iraq. Props to him, and to you for the service to America.

Good step stress busters:

The Rhythmic Step / MIC / Interval Max DVD. Rhythmic Step is advanced fast-paced choreography, tricky to learn (thus keeping your brain engaged in a creative way) and challenging. MIC has a hi/lo AND a step segment, with interval blasts at the end of each routine. And Interval Max, well . . . let's just say you need your entire body and brain to get through this awesome high intensity workout.

The Interval Max 2 / Cardio Weights DVD: two more step routines for the experienced stepper, with another awesome interval workout and a step-circuit workout that incorporates weighted resistance cycles.

The step DVD's from Cathe's newest Body Blast series: challenging and fun.

IMHO, the way to chip away at the stress-eating situation is to do slow, focused heavy weight training. I found, a few years ago, that when I added in consistent total body strength training to my weekly schedule, focusing on building good lean mass AND increasing my poundage capabilities, my appetite naturally righted itself and I was far less apt to eat for reasons other than healthy hunger. Thus, I would suggest any of the Cathe split-set DVD's for strength training: Pure Strength; Slow and Heavy Series (a really good, DIFFERENT lifting style); or Pyramid Upper and Lower Body. There are certainly others, but those are my picks.

Thanks for joining us! Let us know how you get on.

Also, for core, ab and back training:

Consider getting the Ab Hits DVD. This DVD has 12 of Cathe's classic training routines for the abdominals AND all-around core conditioning with traditional supine ab work as well as core work with planks, supermans, etc.

Hey Melissa,

Hats off to you for digging in and starting an exercise program. My advice is to do the Body for Life 12-week program (lots of supporters here) combined with Cathe's workouts. You would have a healthy nutrition program (not diet), with a free day built in.

For exercise, I would buy Cathe's Intensity Series, using IMAX2, Cardio & Weights and the pre-mixes for your cardio days and the Pyramids, Muscle Endurance for your weight days. Boot Camp is for the days when you really want to work yourself to the bone. ;-)

You mentioned that you were short on time to workout. The Intensity Series workouts are almost all under an hour. Maybe it is something your daughter could do with you, since she is an athlete as well.

For moral support, visit this board often. It's a great group here.

Good luck, we'll all be cheering for you.

Thanks so much for you support, encouragement and prayers. I have made a list of all of your workout recommendations and am going to order something today.
Lynda, thanks from the frozen pea idea, I'm going to try that!
Shopgirl, I will check out the Body For Life program and I do think my daughter would love to join me.
Kim, we are right with each other and I would love to keep in touch. YOU are not alone!
Now, I hope you guys don't mind me sharing a letter from my husband. I was snooping through his email and found a letter he sent to my niece that made me cry.... I'm sure not everyone will agree politically but you got to be proud to be an American when you read this:

I first want to thank you for taking the time to sit down and write out a heartfelt message. I do want to reassure you that I am taking care of my men and myself the best I know how. I want you to know, and everyone for that matter, that there are things in life that are even more important than life itself. Freedoom, liberty, and the right to think for yourself are ideas that have to be earned by a nation, and that can be very costly. The more it cost, the more precious they are. Even more costly is the task of protecting those freedoms and liberties that everyone in our country benifits from, regardless of how ungrateful or naive they may be. I want you also to know that I believe with all my heart, in what I'm doing, and that these ideas are worth fighting for. There are those in this world who will do whatever it takes to destroy who we are and what we stand for. There are those who are killing innocent Iraqis in hopes of de-railing our efforts to establish a democracy within these oppressed poeple. Be proud to be an American. Never let anybody get away with telling you that we do not have a great country with freedoms and liberties and responsibilities that are unparrelled in world history. Never let anybody bad-mouth our efforts to bring freedom and justice to a people who have been tortured, exploited and murdered for 30 years. Be a compassionate American, one who extends a helpful hand to the less fortunate. Be a strong American, one who is willing to confront tyranny and oppression with the strength that our country can muster. Be a strong and good leader in the Lord.
Look around you. Look at your friends. What will they become? I say there are 3 kinds of people in our country...there are the sheep, who are 98% of the people in our country. They will do what the news, or there political indoctrination has trained them to do-to follow. Then there are the 1% who are the wolves. They will feed off the sheeps of the world. They cause misery, pain and take every advantage of the sheeps weaknesses. The final 1% are the sheep-dogs. They are the protectors of our society. They are caretakers. They are the ones who realize that a society has to have law and order. A country has to have people who are willing to understand that there are ideals in life, that are more important than oneself. They are the firefighters, the cops, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines. They are nurses, mothers and paramedics. They are the ones who feel so compelled with taking care of human lives that they are willing to sacrifice their own in order to accomplish that. What a powerful idea! Without these people, who would catch the rapist? Who would put out the fire? Who would cure the sicknesses? Who would march to war, and remove a murderer, a wolf in leaders clothes? This is a moment in our countries history that is as every bit important as Granpa Hughes felt when he marched off to war as a young Marine in the Pacific. He fought the wolves. What courage that took! He was not a sheep, he was not a wolf, he was a protector of our liberties and freedoms. He was a sheepdog. Now, once again, look around you. Ask yourself what the people around you are doing, but more importantly, what do you see yourself being? You have such a wonderful future ahead of you. Always be true to yourself. Know the truth, at all costs, even if it is the most painful experience of your life. Be willing to stand up for the down-trodden. Never take for granted your freedoms and liberties that others have died for. Take to task anybody who is willing to bad-mouth our country-and ask them what their plan is. Ask them if they are prepared to sacrifice for the freedoms that we all enjoy to make this a better world. You will find that a lot of Americans do not have a fighting spirit. They lack the backbone to fight for ideals that do not add up to money. There are a lot of sheep out there.
I know this is pretty heavy stuff. I am actually in the finest period of my life so far. I have so much to be thankful to the good Lord. I wake up every day and count my blessings. It is hard on Melissa and the kids. And it is hard on me too. But there is one idea that is even more important than what I have discussed above. An ideal that has been passed to us and is what I consider that greatest gift to man, and that is Love. Melissa and the kids know that my love for them is so great that even the destruction of war cannot compare. I know that out of all this, we are building an even greater appreciation for the gifts that God has given us. Out of all this, our love is growing deeper and deeper. Once again, thank you for showing your concern and love. Take care and be strong!!!

Wow Melissa! Thanks for sharing your story and E-mail from your hubby! You are going to be an all NEW you when he returns! Please thank him for us for all he is doing! You/hubby/kids will be in my thoughts & prayers. I agree that the "PS Series" is an excellent choice. One of my fav Cathe's and it has an awesome Back workout that might help your neck/back issues. Just ease into any of Cathe's tapes. There is not a Cathe you won't be please with. Let us know if you have any more questions. There is always someone here to help. Hi there--thank your husband for his service to our great country for me--I just said a prayer for him and for you. That was a great letter.

take care
Maggie

ps--start with any Cathe you like--you'll end up buying it all anyway}( --she is very addictive.

Hi Melissa
Like everyone here says you won't go wrong w/any of Cathes workouts the intensity series has alot to offer I love muscle endurance and MIS and PUB PLB I don't really do much stepping anymore as I got a brand new treadmill so I use ythis for cardio Ilove it lots easier on all the joints inc luding the neck but my hip was my trouble spot so took the Dr recommendation and I love treadmill you can run walk in crease speed or incline and for me I watch TV which really makes time go by But cathes step tapes are great
As for stress eating I think we are all guilty of that well I know I am actually i find i eat when i am mad sad happy whatever but working out definitely reduces stress so Imake sure I do it everyday
You Husbands letter was really something to read how right he is! Thank him for me Ido appreciate him fighting for us!
Good luck in your fitness goals come here for motivation and support

I have my aerobic area fixed up in the basement. It is pretty inviting and I'm looking forward to using it. I had to locate my workout tapes that were not unpacked after our last move. I have Max. Intensity, Step Jam, & Body Max. I have some good ideas from your suggestions of Cathe selections that I would like to add. I also purchased a poster board with a graph already printed on it. I am going to make a weight loss chart on it and weigh myself once a week and plot it on the chart. I also want to put some inspirational posters on the wall.

I have some cook books for athletes that I used when I lost weight previously, and later today I will post them for you.

Thanks again for your support and prayers.

Melissa

Melissa,

Good for you for deciding to get back in shape! Exercise will help you deal with stress better.

You got a lot of great advice here already.

My husband is leaving for Iraq next month. Exercise is helping me cope with that place he is going to.

You can do this and keep us posted!!

Have a great day!!
