MY SPACE

hey everyone!

I've been using Cathe's workout for about 4 years now. But -- this question is not related to her great routines.

I wanted to know if you go on to someone's myspace page, can they tell that you've visited?

I'm not talking about the profiles that are private that require you to put in a password, but just the public access myspace.

I have an old friend I been wanting to contact, but didn't want him to know I found his page and visited yet.

thanks ;-)

You can "surf" safely by doing the following. Before visiting a site like that clear your cookies. Then visit the site. Do you have to log in to myspace to see someone's public profile? If so all bets are off.

Have you ever notice that if you go to weather.com and plug in your address you'll start getting ads for your area? The locality was harvested from weather.com's cookie

I had a myspace account for one afternoon. In my profile I put in that I was married and all of the pop up ads for online dating kept coming up, you'd think they'd target advertising. It was a social networking site that I guess I'm not hip enough for.

Unfortunately, it's too late!!! I went to his page (b/c my coworker who has a MySpace acct. told me he couldn't tell if I went on it).

Only now to find out that there is a program some MySpace account holders can subscribe to that can track your ip address and find out who's been browsing on their page!!!

I'm a little embarassed. This person hadn't logged on their webpage since the end of '06 and then suddenly, on the day I visited his page, he added a vague reference to me on the same day I visited. x( Coincidence, I don't think so!!!

I'm trying not to be creepy about this, I was just curious if he had a MySpace page and wasn't sure I wanted him to know. I was going to get my own page. but like you I guess it's just not for me.

Thanks

i have wondered this same thing also...so if you log on to myspace and say your username is your email address-the person can see who you are??

Especially if you log on, which I didn't because I don' belong to myspace. I just viewed someone's public profile that was not password protected. But now my coworker said that it's a scam and you can't see a specific person's identity if you view a public profile. They can just tell how many "hits" they've received but not the actual personal information of the party viewing the profile.

My coworker does have a myspace account and is a totally up on the latest and greatest in terms of technology in computers and the like (he majored in computer science and programming in college).

He told me that any website that claims you can "see" who's checking out your profile is bogus. They are working on software for the general public that can do that with myspace, but it's not available yet. Only myspace can view people's ip addresses.

All I know is I was so embarassed at the thought of this person knowing that I looked at his page, I will never do it again!! lol;)

There are 2 tracking programs that people with MySpace accounts can add to their profile to "track" who comes to their profile. One is called Trakzor(www.trakzor.com). It is simply a code that is added to a profile. It tracks where(city and state) the person is who visits that profile, NOT an address, or exactly who you are. The only way it would tell someone else who you are, is if you are also signed up to use Trakzor. I have used this for more than a year.

The other program is called "I see you"...www.safeprofile.com. This program tracks IP addresses. I used this one for a while and didn't like it. This code can also be hidden, so people visiting don't know they are being tracked, but you have to pay to get that.

HTH,
Michelle

But in tracking your IP address you are still almost invisible. I have DSL and my system IP address changes every time I cycle the modem's power. The y can trace me to Verizon, which is national. Unless you are at a large fixed company which has it's own Internet server it takes weeks to tie an IP address to a name. Ask the FBI why it takes months to track down the kiddie porn distributors?

Hi Copswife,

So, when you use trakzor what exactly can you see? Can you see an email address or name or just the city and state? I think this guy saw more.

With an IP address that safeprofile.com what are you able to tell from that? Can you also tell the person's name and email address.

I know this person must have had something, b/c he hadn't logged on for almost 3months and then the day that I looked at his myspace, he made a vague reference to me on his page as if he was telling me that he knew I had visited!! That's the reason why I think he knew it was me.

This is a very long and complicated story, so I won't get into it. But I will never visit his my space page again!! I'm really embarassed. Prior to a few days ago, I had never even gone on myspace before, now I just feel like a jerk;(

No one can see any names or email addresses. Just a city and state. Same thing with the safeprofile...just a city and state.

I browse around myspace all the time, I just figure if someone does not want you to see their profile, then they have the option to make it private.

Michelle:)

I look at it like this: If the myspace account holder is so self-absorbed and concerned about himself/herself to research IP account addresses, etc., who wants 'em anyway as a friend/acquaintance/etc.?!!

So, go surf, research, etc. That's what it's there for... Another great way to research people or start a "group" is facebook.com. I'm starting to organize a high school reunion for next year and have been able to track down people I've totally forgotten.

I agree. I mean what's the point.;) The situation is that this was a "mutual flirtation" over the past few months. And one of us is involved in a relationship, so it never went any further.

Just out of curiosity I looked on his page, he must have known it was me and made a reference that he was attracted to me, but that I was "not available" to him.

No good can come of this. I choose to stay away. But it's always fun to look.:D

Thanks for all the input. Never realized this would be such a hot topic:7
