My broken foot is still slowing me down

Winter

Cathlete
Hi All,

I broke my foot Aug 14th. I have been off crutches since the end of October and yet all I am able to do is walk for 20 minutes or so.

WHY? It is taking so long to heal. I broke it by my pinky toe (5th meta?? or a jones break). I am having trouble with my big toe - hurts to bend it so in turn hurts to walk.

As for PT I am doing toe raises, and massaging the foot. I did go to PT 10 times. Is there something else I can be doing to get this foot to quite hurting and get back to Cathe? It has been almost 4 months and I have gained 6 lbs. I feel terrible and want to cut my foot off!

Am I being too impatient?

Thanks,
Winter

That seems like it's taking a long time. I've had bunion surgery on both of my feet - they break the bone for that surgery. I was bake working out within 2 months. But, it wasn't a broken toe - so I guess I don't know how long that would take to heal. I remember it took quite a while for the stiffness to go away on my big toe.

Could you do something else besides Cathe, like maybe a stationary bike?

What does your doctor say?

Winter,

I would go for another assessment, with a podiatrist or orthopedic doctor. That does seem too long for healing. One way the body tells you there is something wrong is by feeling pain. I would not be surprised with decreased range of motion or numbness after surgery but I would be concerned with pain after 6-12 weeks. I'm sorry you're hurting but please go have it checked.

Hi Winter,

I broke my foot several years ago & it took about 5 months before I felt "almost normal". However, everyone is different & I would certainly agree you should check with you doctor.
Good luck,

Ruth:)

Hi Winter! I am not familiar with how long a broken foot normally takes to heal but wanted to sympathize with you. I can totally understand your frustration since I just came off an 11-month injury. I'll tell you what...I thought I would never be normal again but I am flying high these past couple weeks as I get back to my normal workouts. I don't mean to take away from "you" but just to say, Hang-In-There!!! I would also go see another doctor or call your doctor back and get his opionion on why it is taking this long. Good Luck and I will be sending extra thoughts & prayers your way. Keep us posted.

Hi Winter,
The same thing happened to me not long after I'd started to workout again after recovering from another accident. I went back to the Doctor and the hospital to make sure nothing had gone wrong and was told that it was simply a "slow healing fracture" - something which is common. A quick search on google and a talk with some of my friends (those who had broken bones in the past) confirmed this (I always double-check anything any medic tells me) which helped me with my worry but not with my frustration! It took 4 months before I could walk far enough to get to work and actually work and another few months (maybe 3) before the pain subsided altogether. I did have a very bad break though so this was normal for me. My Doctor did say I should have had one of my toes pinned but this would have prevented me from bending it - something which I'm glad I didn't have done now.

Fast forward to this year when I broke 3 of my toes (on the same foot!) while it hurt a LOT it took 6 weeks to heal as you would expect. It did take a while longer before my foot was strong enough to bear my weight in yoga poses like Chaturanga or plain old planks and push-ups. Yoga helped my foot the most and second to that would be Yoga Toes which helped put my arch back up (it fell when I first broke my left foot) and deals with pain.

Workout wise, I was able to do kickboxing as long as I took out the impact, some strength but I had to keep the weights lighter so as not to irritate my foot, Yoga (modified of course), Pilates and Callanetics/Bar Method/Lotte Berk workouts.

Thanks for your support everyone. I go back to the doctor for a final xray on Dec 21st.

I will keep you posted!

Thanks again

Hi there:

So sorry to hear about your injury!!

I broke my foot a few years back in the same area of the foot as yours..Unfortunately, it does take a while to heal..It took me about 5-6 months after the cast was off to feel completely normal.

On the upside, I did really make some amazing strength gains in my upperbody and abs! Also, if you have access to a bike, that helped me get my cardio fix. I also did a ton of leg floor work to help maintain strength and tone in my legs. Since your cast is off, can you do squats, deadlifts, etc? at this point?

Lastly, make sure you have some really good supportive shoes. I find that when my workout shoes are starting to get old, the foot that I broke is the first place I start to feel it.

Hang in there, I totally know its frustrating, but it will get better and in no time you will be back to your usual routine.

PS.. Looking forward to hearing what your doc says!

Take care, Lynn M.
