Muscle Mass and Metabolism

Does anybody know if resting metabolism increases due to muscle GROWTH or muscle DENSITY? Or both? If it is growth, does that mean that if you don't want to increase your muscle size (you'd rather maintain), then you won't be increasing your resting metabolism?

And here's another interesting thought for those of you involved in Freestyle training:

The theory behind it is that working your lower body 6 days a week results in overtraining, which leads to a smaller lower body, correct? And if we consider that endurance atheletes have much smaller muscles than body builders, that theory seems true. However, what is actually happening when your lower body gets smaller? I'm sure some fat is gone, but aren't you also burning some MUSCLE? And since you have less muscle, doesn't that mean your resting metabolism is lower? Granted, you could be doing more cardio to compensate.

Just a thought.

Snazzy,

Your pictures are fabulous. It's amazing how much you've changed in just 8 weeks.

Thanks, Snazzy! Those answers were very informative. I was just wondering if it was possible to increase muscle mass (and therefore your resting metabolism) WITHOUT increasing size. Probably not.

Thanks, Elaine

PS. Your pics look great! The changes are so dramatic. I'm impressed!

Thanks for the compliments, Candi and Elaine! It means a lot, because I was actually hoping to be farther along. I guess I should just count my blessings! LOL

Thanks!
