Any suggestions on good places to raise a family in Portland Oregon? DH and I are 43 y/o with 4 boys ages 14 (freshman in H.S.), 12 (7th grade), 10 (3rd grade) and 7 (1st grade). We all love to exercise and the outdoors. Looking for good schools and price range around 400,000 or so. I have heard really great things about Portland. We are moving from the midwest so a bit out of my comfort zone. This is very early in the process not even a job offer yet but I"m trying to stay ahead of the game. Sounds like a great place to live healthy. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks ladies!

Sandy Oregon

It's east of Portland and at the foot of Mount Hood. My dad lived there and we visited frequently when I was growing up. My older brother went to high school there. It's close to the mountains and the columbia river. If I remember right it was about a 45 minute drive from Portland. I remember driving along the Columbia River and watching the sailboats on the way there and back home. I haven't been there in years, but remember it as a pretty town. They had a great pizza place. MY sister worked there. Lindsey Reynolds (6 million dollar Woman) had a ranch just outside of Sandy and would rent the pizza place to throw parties. Oregon is a beautiful state. I grew up in the Roseburg area. I swear the most beautiful coastline in the nation is in Oregon. I hope you love living there.

I've never lived there but was there to visit once, we have a Aunt and Uncle who live in McMinnville. All I can say is it's a beautiful area , I loved everywhere we went and could definitly see myself living there , I bet you'll love it!

A friend moved to Oregon a few years ago..... this is the mail announcing the move:
(note the "Los Altos" he refers to is in California bay area)

Dunthorpe, OR, which is
an unincorporated area between Portland and Lake Oswego (Portland being
the "big city", and Lake Oswego being the small local center).

Portland is big enough (~600k) to have culture and nightlife, but small
enough that it isn't a mess (ie it has working public transportation, and
a downtown that people actually walk in). Lake Oswego is the "cute" town,
maybe the area equivalent of Los Altos. Dunthorpe is the local "good
school" area, ie we are (according to everybody) in the best school
district in Oregon (Riverdale). Think Los Altos Hills, except we can
afford to live there.

The nice thing is that we're literally 12-15 minutes away from a real
downtown with some life, and 3 minutes away from the "cute downtown"
with restaurants, shopping and Peet's (and Starbucks, of course). Compared
to where we live now, that's pretty different, yet we'll actually have a
bigger house and yard..

Beth back..... good luck with your decision!
