Mother-In-Law

I am not sure if this is the right place for this post but I'd appreciate any feedback. My 17 month old daughter seems to like my mother-in-law more than she likes me and it's making me really sad. My mother-in-law watches my daughter once a week all day and then we see them every Sunday for dinner at least. On the day my mother-in-law watches my girl they play all day which is a switch from me who is also trying to get other things done, i.e. workout, fix dinner, clean, work. I play with her but not as much. Daughter cries when grandma leaves. Is this normal? I know this is petty and I should be happy to have a problem such as this but it is kind of upsetting when my daughter is going to her grandma rather than her mother when she needs comforting.

Hi Susan.

I don't have children (YET!) but I was little once myself and was VERY VERY close with my mom's mom! My mom used to do laundry at my grandma's house and just plain ol' spent a lot of time there coz my dad worked looong hours so he was hardly ever home. My grandmother would let us get away with anything and everything! Ofcourse, my sis and I formed a bond with my grandmother that was the waaaay strong. We would complain about leaving her house when it was time to go home even though we saw her so often! Lots of time my mom would let us sleep over there just coz it was easier than the fight to take us home! lol That bond has always been there (in my heart) even though my grandma passed when I was only 10 years old but it never lessened the love and respect and gratitude I have for my mom! I was little kid who loved grandma...I wasn't trying to hurt anyone's feelings and I certainly still loved my mom! My mom and grandma were the only 2 in my family who I would willingly go to for a long time-I was a mom/grandma sucker! lol Anyway, like I said, I'm not a mom yet (I'm half way there tho!), but I would try not to take it too personally even though I'm sure it can be hard at times. I'm sure your daughter doesn't love grandma more....but she's a little kid and it's fun at grandma's house so naturally she wants to spend time there.

I hope I helped some.= )

Have a great work out!

Yes, I know I am being silly but you still want to be #1 all of the time. Thanks for your input. I was super close to my grandma & grandpa (dad's side) too. I used to go and spend the entire weekend there and still didn't want to leave when it was time to go. I'd hide under the bed. lol.

I hope you're having a good pregnancy! Do you know what you're having yet? This forum was so great when I was pregnant - I came here all of the time. I am was so happy that I exercised throughout my pregnancy. It makes a difference in the way that you recover too I think. Oh well, thanks again and take care.

I'm sure that you want to be # 1 regardless. I can certainly understand that one.

My pregnancy is going great. Minimal to no side effects here. The forum has been helpful and has helped keep me motivated to exercise. I feel it has kept my weight under control and I think it will keep me strong for labor, delivery and recovery as well.

Is it pretty much guaranteed that I will be told not to exercise for about 6 weeks after childbirth (natural)? What about stopping beforehand? Were you told to stop the exercise completely prior to giving birth? I know all docs are different...I'm just trying to get an idea of what to expect...THANKS!:)

Have a great work out!

No, there's no guarantee that you'll be told not to exercise for 6 weeks after. I got complete clearance at 4 wks which surprised me b/c I had a 4th degree tear. I thought doing squats would break open the stitches. I worked out right up until I delievered. My workouts were fewer and less intense though near the end though. Maybe 2-3 times per week instead of 4-5 and def. no jumping. :)

I delivered naturally (with epidural) and pretty much felt pretty good after about 2 weeks. I didn't do anything at all until after my 4 week follow-up visit. It's really hard NOT to work out but you also enjoy that time with the baby. Also, Nicole was not a good sleeper the first few months so I was diving into bed anytime she fell asleep. I think the big worry is bleeding so if your not bleeding heavily then I think you can at least walk. Some people notice an increase in bleeding with physical activity so they have to be careful not to do too much.

Overall, my pregnancy was pretty good. The only major thing was water retention and swelling. I started that right about 5 1/2 mos and it got really bad by 8 mos. My legs were like playdough - you could push your thumb into my leg and the impression would stay there for about 20 minutes. Yikes.

Thanks for the info, Susan! I really appreciate it!:)

I hoping for as minimal down time from exercise as I can get only because the more down time I am required to take, the less motivated I will be...It could be extremely difficult for me to get back into it if I have to take too much time off, especially with all of the other changes that will be taking place in my life at the time.

Have a great work out!
