Money during travel - traveler's checks?

As long as my back is in half decent shape, our family is heading to Las Vegas and Yosemite from June 2- June 13th. We really don't want to carry a large amount of cash. What is the best form of currency to carry? I really want to stay away from credit cards...are traveler's checks still used? Or would a prepaid VISA money card be worthwhile? I tend to get out of control if the debit card is used - I'm afraid I'll lose track and spend too much:eek:

I just worry about funky little stores or gas stations that won't honor traveler's checks or cards. I know we'll have to carry some cash for odds and ends, etc.

Any experience or advice is appreciated!

I have travelled with Traveler's Checks but that was some time ago. I think you can also take them into a bank and cash them while travelling. A prepaid VISA is a good idea. Just about every place accepts VISA and if it is a prepaid card, your spending can't get too out of control!
