Moms to be Check-In

Cathlete
Hi All,
Just wondered how all our moms-to-be are doing? DH and I have been on holiday for a week and had a fantastic time - came back feeling really relaxed and chilled out! Then ended up in hospital 2 days later with bleeding. Turns out I have "varicosities" (sp?) which are varicose-type veins "down below" which are bleeding intermittently. Apparently this happens sometimes, due to the increased blood flow to the pelvic area. Anyway, the hospital were great, checked me out thoroughly, listened to baby's heart-beat, scanned me, etc. Apparently baby is a little on the small side for how far along I am (26 weeks - 6 months), but the hospital doesn't seem too worried at this point. As they said, the baby doesn't read the text books about how big they are supposed to be!! Anyway, my big news is that it looks as though it's going to be a boy! DH and I are chuffed to bits! (We would have been just as chuffed with a girl though!). Hmmnnn - now we have to start seriously thinking about boys names!
I hope you are all well - would love to hear how you are all doing!
Kaz.

Today Is The Tomorrow We Worried About Yesterday And All Is Well.

Hi Kaz,
Welcome back from vacation! Sorry to hear about the varicosities--you must have been nervous until you found out what was going on. I am in my 23rd week at this point and have had no difficulties (knock on wood!). I am wondering what exactly the hospital meant when they said the baby was "on the small side". I ask because when I went for my last ultrasound, my baby's limbs were slightly underdeveloped compared to the head and they got me all nervous when they started talking about Down's syndrome. My baby is negative for all the other physical markers with the exception of the limb length. I am happy to hear that your hospital said not to worry. I am having another ultrasound in two weeks to see if the baby's limbs have caught up and are in a "normal" range. I think the head is just bigger to accomodate all the brains--gonna be a smart one!!

Hi Kaz. Sorry you have varicosites. Hope it doesn't turn out to be a big problem. That is great you are having a boy!

Beets, that must have been a nerve-wracking ultrasound. You'll have to let us know how everything looks in two weeks.

I'm doing pretty good myself. I've had a hectic week and have only exercised one day so far. At my OB appointment this week my doctor was a tiny bit concerned that I've only put on one pound since my first appointment at 7 weeks. I'm 15 weeks now. I've never counted calories and am wondering if I am eating enough to support a baby and what little exercise I have been doing (about 3 days per week lately). I think I'll write down everything I eat for the next few days just to make sure.

Hope everyone else is doing fine.

Michelle (due 4/3)

Hi All,

Kaz, I'm glad you had a great vacation and your varicosities don't seem to be a big problem. What a relief; I'm sure it was scary until you knew what it was. And you're having a boy! How very exciting (we are too :))! Any ideas for names yet?

Beets, I hope your next ultrasound settles any concerns about your baby. Please keep us posted.

I've been feeling really good, except for being tired. I'm sure the exercise is helping - I'm still trying to do weights on each body part twice per week. It's at least helping my back, which is always a problem area for me.

Take care everyone!
Sandi (due 01/23/03)

Hi everyone. I am 25wks (due 1/19/03) and have been doing good w/getting in 5 days of exercise but lately it seems that my belly just popped out and now I find things are getting a little harder and I'm getting tired more easily.

I've also noticed the veins exploding on my right leg. I'm really hoping they go away after delivery.

Charlene

Hello everyone!

Kaz and Charlene, sorry to hear about the vein problems. I imagine they aren't pretty, but do they also hurt? Bleeding usually hurts.

Beets, how nasty to hear your baby's limbs are underdevelopped. Should they tell us stuff like this??? I mean, he/she will proably just be fine.

On the topic of Down's syndrom, my husband has a friend who has a baby. He told a story of having a test for Down's Syndrome and was told it was possible (that the baby would have it) but that the test is really difficult to administer at just the right time. The result being that people may be told their baby will have Down's Syndrome, but they can't verify it for sure. So then you have to worry for the next however many months. Did something get lost in the translation? Is any of this true? Should one even have this test?

Michelle, are you really worried to have only gained 1 pound? I guess I am still at the stage where I worry about putting on too much weight. Maybe when I actually feel a baby I'll switch over and worry about him or her!

Sandi, If tiredness is your biggest problem, then I suspect you are doing well!

I am only 6-8 weeks into pregnancy. I still have trouble with the whole counting thing. Mostly because my cycles are so long and I don't know yet for sure when I conceived.

Previously I only experienced some s.o.b. and some fatigue. But this week I developped a uti and yeast infection simultaneously and my stomach feels quesy from time to time.

I swear I am so sick and tired of vegetables. I just hate them.

I had my first ob appointment. Didn't care for the nurse practitioner AT ALL. Hope I don't have to deal with her much. But I did really like the new doctor. (My previous one doesn't deliver babies.) She said my uterus is growing fine.

I still worry about miscarrying. Does the risk decrease at 12 weeks if you count weeks starting from the first day of your last period? And if mine are 5 weeks apart, not 4, should I subtract a week?

Its been a rough week for me. Probably more mentally than physically. I am ready for it to be over!

Gina (due 06/02/03, or so I'm told)

Hey all, good to hear from everyone!

Kaz, I'm thoroughly and completely chuffed for you! By the way, most USians won't be familiar with that term but with all the EastEnders and various other British tele I watch, we're speaking the same language! I have actually been to London (unfortunately only) once on holiday with my mum and I absolutely adored every minute of it, unbelievably fantastic!! Mum's making her yearly journey back in February (she's going a couple months early this year seeing as I'm due in April) and I asked her to slip into that big hospital at Southbank near Tower Bridge to nab me one of those little infant jumpers and some nappies to boot just so my little hobbit will have something to wear that's from within earshot of the Saint Mary LeBow bells! I figure it'll bring them one step closer to being a real cockney ;D! Where did you go on holiday anyway?

Hope your veins are on the mend! I've been reading that it's pretty common to have that problem during pregnancy but I don't know at what point it's meant to begin clearing up. Keep us updated, alright.

Beets, try not to worry about your baby's limb for now, all babies develop differently and I honestly think the word "normal" is just way overused! We'll be thinking about you and your family, and hoping the sonogram goes really well in a couple weeks! Please let us know.

Michelle, it's been really hard for me to get around to working out too, hopefully I'll get one in tonight. I'm beginning to try a lot more low impact stuff, much more comfortable, especially for my pelvic floor muscles!

By the way, I still haven't gained any weight ever since I started trying to get pregnant and I'm 14 weeks now! I'm not worried about it though, I'm eating well and taking my pre-natal vitamins so everything should be fine. I've heard that it's not uncommon for a lot of women to not start gaining weight until the second trimester.

Charlene, hope your veins get better too! Well done on exercising so often, guess your belly is saying it's time to start taking it easier, huh. Are you an ‘outie' yet or just getting a bigger belly all of a sudden?

Sandi, congrats on your little guy! Have you got any ideas for names yet? I've been noticing that it's going to be hard to modify a lot of the weight work I'm used to doing because my belly is going to be getting in the way once I'm big. I'm already adjusting the step to being inclined now so I'm not laying flat on my back for chest, tris & abs. Man, makes me really want a Bollinger Super Step! Anyway, you'll be really glad you kept your back work up when it comes time for the big day!

Gina, so sorry to hear about your UTI & yeasty! I've been dreading that because I'm pretty susceptible to both of those little horrors, especially UTIs. I'm sure I'll have my share of those before long. I don't even know if those wonderful little red pills that help me make it through life till I can get to the doctor for a prescription are safe for the kitten. Guess I need to find out, huh. By the way, what's s.o.b. mean, ‘soreness of back' maybe? Glad you like your new doctor, hope things go more smoothly with the NP next time.

Yes, your risk of miscarriage goes down after week 12 or 13, basically after the first trimester. Has your doctor scheduled your first sonogram yet? They're supposed to be able to tell about how many weeks along you are if you're not certain how to count already. Hope your tummy feels better. Just try not to stress out too much, it's not good for you or the baby. Hang in there!

As for myself, I'm happy to say that baby & I are now in our second trimester, week 14!! Tuesday was exactly six months before the due date (April 8, 2003) and I'm so over the moon to have reached that milestone! I've been feeling okay except that I haven't really been getting enough rest and this looks to be the most stressful month I'll have had in a very long time. Way too much stuff going on at work and extracurricularly. I'll be glad when all I have to worry about is regular old boring work stuff and getting ready to move into our new apartment! Ooooh, more room, so excited!

Anyway, dh I are thinking about going down to register soon, I'm so giddy! We're actually going to see about getting as much stuff as possible at second-hand stores and the such as well as waiting to see what all of our friends' babies outgrow in the near future before we go and pick out too much at the Baby Depot, but it's just so exciting to think about registering!

Well, I hope for the best for everyone, looking forward to hearing all the updates!

Hey! I'm checking in.

I've been having a case of the queasies so I haven't been motivated to do anything. I only got one workout in this week and I've fallen off the healthy eating bandwagon temporarily.
I didn't really care what I ate this week as long as it was filling. I am freaking out about this trip I'm leaving to go on Monday. I'll be eating out for all my meals, Mon-Fri. I know I'll be tempted to order some fattening foods when I see what others around me are eating(there are about 20 of us going on vacation).

I don't think it's fair for you guys who never gain weight in your 1st trimester(smile). I always do! Last pregnancy I gained 7 lbs in my 1st trimester. I went to the doctor on Thursday and I've gained 1 1/2 lbs. I personally think it's the clothes I was wearing(smile).

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

Valerie--due date May 26, 2003.

Count me in for a check in!

Hello everyone,

I am 34 weeks tomorrow and carrying this little boy all out in front. I've gained 20lbs so far - not much. Still doing lots of walking which is good.

I've had a couple of hospital admissions with fibroid pains - last time the doctors thought I was in pre-term labour at 6 months! It was very frightening but all has been well since. The doctors don't expect me to go to term (40 weeks) and anticipate labour at 38 weeks - arghh! I only have 4 weeks left before little Max arrives.I keep praying I get into hospital in time for the blessed epidural.

I have enjoyed being pregnant but will enjoy being a mummy more I think. He already has regular waking times and kicks me and wakes me up etc.. so I'm sleeping in 2 hour segments as it is! It's lovely though.

Anyway, enough for now. Hope everyone else is well?

Your friend in fitness, Fitnik

RE: Count me in for a check in!

Hi Guys,

It's so lovely to hear from you all!

Beets - I'm sure everything will be fine with your little one. As the hospital told me, baby's don't read the text books, and develop in their own sweet way! Although I really value of all this modern technology which can tell us so much about our growing babies, sometimes it can be a "double-edged sword" can't it?! Please let us know how your next scan goes.

Michelle - I wish I had only gained 1 pound in the first trimester! LOL! Like Valerie, I also gained about 7lbs initially, and that was in spite of having a viral sickness/diorrhea(sp?) bug at about 5 weeks along! I was really worried at that time that the baby wasn't going to grow properly or get enough nutrients, but the hospital told me that babies are alot tougher than we give them credit for and basically thrive off whatever stores Mum has (leaving us tired and depleted, LOL!). So I am sure your little one is doing just fine!!

Charlene, I can certainly relate to the tiredness thing - I was incredibly tired in the first few weeks, but felt much more energetic as I entered the 2nd trimester. Having just reached 26 weeks, I am now starting to feel the tiredness creeping back in again! I'm sure your energy levels will improve again now you are in the 2nd trimester. every day is different though, isn't it? Sometimes you can feel great and full of beans, and others you could sleep the day away!!

Sandi - congratulations on your little boy! DH and I cannot seem to decide on a name. We had a name all picked out for a boy (Daniel), but then two sets of friends of ours both had boys and both called them Daniel, so this has kind of put me off! I'm sure we will come up with something soon - otherwise, he'll pop his little head out and we'll still be calling him "thingamybob", LOL! How about you - have you settled on any names?

Gina - the varicosities can be sore, and are usually more irritated after working out, I guess due to the increased blood flow. However, the hospital is happy for me to continue exercising as long as I don't exhaust myself, as they appreciate how being fit and healthy will help me during labour and hopefully speed up recovery afterwards! I can relate to your fears regarding miscarriage in the 1st tri - you suddenly seem to hear all the statistics which can be a little frightening. Another one of those instances where you can know too much! I counted my 12 weeks from the date of my last period - whether this is technically right or not, it made me feel better psychologically once I had crossed that "imaginary" 12 week line. I hope your UTI and yeast problems clear up soon.

Foolofatook (love that name - I also am a huge Lord of the Rings fan!). I'm pleased you enjoyed your trip to London - how great that your Mum is coming over and can get some "London Momentoes" for your little one! I live in Bristol, which is over 100 miles away from London on the South West coast of England, but we actually went on holiday to Cornwall - and stayed in a beautiful little cottage in the middle of nowhere, but within easy reach of the beach - it was wonderful! I'm glad you understood my "expression" - I sometimes forget that you guys may not understand my UK-isms!!

Valerie - I know what you mean about the food thing - I don't think I've ever really stayed on the wagon since finding out I was pregnant! If I get a craving for something, I just have to have it! Even if it is a chocolate chip muffin, LOL! Enjoy your vacation, and don't worry too much about the food - after all - that's what vacations are all about - relaxing and enjoying the finer things in life!

Fitnik - my little one also has regular "waking times" - unfortunately it always seems to be when I get into bed at night! He then decides to do his acrobatic routine - sometimes it feels like he's doing triple somersaults with toe-loop and pike! Seriously though - isn't it wonderful to fel those movements, regardless of what time of day (or night!)!. (PS - lovely speaking to you yesterday!!).

Phew - I can really rabbit on can't I?! Take care all. Keep checking in - it's so great to have "company" and hear how everyone is doing!

Love Kaz.

RE: Count me in for a check in!

Heya Kaz,
Haven't had a chance to post much just lately but I've managed to "drop-in" a bit today. I don't know why I was thinking you're in London, maybe it was FitNik who said they were. Anyway, I've tried to find some websites about Bristol but I'm not having a lot of luck learning much, at least not much more than finding directories and the such. I do see, however, that you're close to Bath and we did have ourselves a daytrip out there during our journeys, absolutely amazing! Saw the ancient Roman baths (of course), had lunch & tea at the Pump Room and enjoyed a great Guide Friday tour! Oh wait, I see that GF has a tour of Bristol, it says "Known for its industrial heritage, Bristol was built around and named after its famed mineral springs. Your tour takes you up to the magnificent Victorian Clifton suspension bridge where you can enjoy views of the surrounding Somerset countryside". Hey, that sounds fun! We also had a daytrip to Lincoln, mum has a friend who lives there and visits them whenever she's back in England. That was so great, I'll never forget any of the wonderful places we visited! I'd love to see Cornwall sometime too, I understand that it's just outrageously gorgeous, glad you guys got to holiday there! Well, sorry about all my incessant rambling on about the homeland, I guess I just get all excited ;-).

So how are your veins doing? How about everyone else, any new news? Actually, I guess it'll be about time for a new check-in pretty soon. Looking forward to hearing how everybody is doing.
