mild pelvic discomfort

A slightly worriesome happened to me today. I was starting my workout and was about 5 minutes into it and was doing stationary lunges (without weight of course), and I felt some discomfort than may have also had the teeniest bit of pain in the pelvic region. So I stopped and just did some easy side steps. But this tight feeling or something --sorry, it is hard to describe-- remained a bit. So I quit working out altogether and laid down for about 30 minutes as it felt best to keep my stomach area straight.

Since then, when I bring my legs up or I bend over or squat down, essentially whenever I squeeze the middle part of me together, I feel this mild discomfort. Because it is mild discomfort, is not getting worse, and is not accompanied by bleeding I am not too alarmed. Still I thought I'd ask you all your opinion.

I am only at 14 weeks pregnant and my doctor didn't seem to think my uterus was any bigger than expected at this point.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Do you think it is the normal stretching of the ligaments? Is it normal to feel better when you are straight? My book said to bend forward to relieve mild abdonminal cramps. Do yo think I could have ruptured something? Should I be more worried? I would call the dr. office, but it is Sat. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Sorry I have trouble keeping it short! Thanks, Gina

I read something in pregnancy book later that night that said that these symptoms are common in the 5th month (me, 4th, good to read ahead I guess) and that they may indeed last for hours. It also said they are often most noticeable when getting up out of a chair. That seems pretty consistent with my squeezing/stretching the pelvic area observation. It did not say to avoid movement or to lay down and rest when this happens. Gina

Hi Gina,

I have only 6 weeks left to go in my pregnancy, and still have these twinges when getting out of bed (and this is my fourth baby!). You feel like you have to stay bent over for awhile until it subsides. Check with your doctor when you go, but I'd say they are perfectly normal "ligament stretching" sensations.

Hi Gina. I'm 16 weeks and have been getting the same sensation since about 12 or 13 weeks. I just assumed (and still assume) it was the normal ligament stretching sensations others have mentioned. My doctors assured me that minor twinges, pricks, etc. are all part of being pregnant. I get these sensations mostly when I get out of my desk chair at work quickly. I do lunges and squats too - using light weights and noticed the sensation once but I just stopped, at that moment, making my lunge so deep. If it gets worse, of course, you might want to ask your doctor. But, it sounds "normal".

Thanks again Helen. My friend (who gave me the maternity pants) couldn't recall (but must have!)having these sensations. I guess we are all different. I am not worried anymore. It all just takes some getting used to. Gina

Gina- the pain you mention sounds a lot like the pain I had yesterday. I am only about 9 weeks along, but yesterday almost ALL day I had crampy stretching pain in my lower abdomen. In the evening it got so bad (like bad menstrual cramps, but less "crampy" and more "stretchy") I was doubled over during half of dinner. I was a little afraid that I might start bleeding or something, so I laid down and napped for about an hour. The laying down totally got rid of the pain, and it hasn't come back since. I was able to have a normal productive errand-running evening.
Who knows what it was- it really shouldn't be a miscarriage, since we saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks and that tells us this pregnancy has a 97%+ chance of going to term. I guess it was just stretching pains. And laying down was all that helped.
I am beginning to show, at least to myself and DH. My waist is thicker, and I can only fit 75% of my pants. Is this about when you all began to show? Or am I early?
