Michelle Kwan bailing on the Olympics??

Has anyone heard about this? I know yesterday she said she had a bad "short practice" so she was considering pulling out of the Olympic games. DH read this morning that she officially bailed due to a groin pull. WTF!!! During her press conference, she never even mentioned a groin pull. She said her body was all tight and felt yucky from sitting in the cold for 4 hours on Friday night. Anyone know any details? I'm trying to learn the facts before forming an opinion...

I'm not keeping up with the Olympics, so I haven't heard anything, but a groin pull seems like a valid reason for backing out. A 'bad short practice' doesn't.

I can't imagine doing a spilt jump with a groin pull (of course, I can't imagine doing one WITHOUT a groin pull, LOL!)

From what I understand, she reinjured herself during practice. I am not sure if it was the same groin injury or a different injury, but she gracefully bowed out.

I think it took a lot of courage, strength and class to pull out when she knew she wasn't at her best. She's a gutsy lady, and I wish her all the best. The Olympics won't be the same without her.

She had a groin pull which kept her from competing in the US championship. She thought she was recovered and would be 100% when she petioned the committee to be allowed to compete in the Olympics. She reinjured it, maybe during that practice, and left the ice early. It got worse through out the day, and she decided she would drop out, instead of competing at less then tip top form. There was a story about her decision in the NBC/Oylmpic web site. She did not drop out because she had a bad practice or felt yukky.

That's absolutely right! She was examined by a doctor and was told she has a NEW groin injury. I think it took a great deal of courage and class for her to step aside and give her spot to Emily Hughes.

VERY classy and courageous athlete, but then she always has been. I have nothing but admiration for her. No other US skater has as many National and World titles as she has. She has been a gift to figure skating for a decade. I wish Emily all the best. We have three exciting skaters to watch in those women, and I can't wait to see them perform! I think Michelle did the right thing, and I know it must have broken her heart to do so, but she's a true professional and a wonderful person to step down when she knows she can't do her best.

I saw an interview with Michelle Kwan this morning and she said that the most important thing was for the US to have the strongest skating team possible NOT for her to win a gold medal.

I thought this displayed the true olympic spirit.

She also spoke of the new groin injury that occurred during her fall at practice yesterday. It isn't career ending, but takes a substantial amount of time to heal. Of course, she is 25, so is probably not going to have a chance at another gold.

I was VERY impressed with her sacrifice.

Michelle is a classy lady. She always comes across as being a true class act, regardless of the situation. She handled this one very well, too. My heart goes out to her. She brought back a good competitive spirit to the Olympics and true grace, in so many ways. I wish her only the best. She does deserve a Gold.

I think it was a very brave thing for her to do. Other athletes might be too egotistical to give up the spot no matter what the impact on the overall team.

BTW, I had no idea she was already 25! Every time I think of her, I think of that skinny little 14 year old....
