Wendy,
I wouldn't recommend a dachshund, honestly. They are very cute and playful, but they can be high maintenance. They can also be snippy and may nip at Joey. I would probably avoid a dog in the hound group because they are stubborn as all get out--LOL!
Don't get me wrong. I loved my dogs with all my heart. I had a dachsie house for 16 years. They were my children and went everywhere with me, slept in my bed, etc. But they are demanding animals, they're stubborn, they'll tear your yard up--but they will rid your yard of moles and other vermin--they'll get into everything under the sun, I could go on and on.
Dachshunds can be hard to train, and yes, they are barking fools. The Far Side has several hilarious dachshund cartoons that are funny because they are soooo true.
I have a million stories I could tell you about my dogs--they were such characters! Dachsies have personality up the wazoo, and they are loyal, but they'll lick your face one minute and nip your hand the next.
Dachshund lovers--I submit myself for flaming--LOL!
Michele
