Hi Michele,
I believe you were familar with skype? If so, do you know if skype to skype calls are free? And do you need $$ on your account to call skype phones?

Thanks in advance,
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn!!

My DH was looking into Skype but we haven't signed up for it yet. I believe it is free, at least that's my understanding. We heard about it from a radio show--Clark Howard. Try his website, www.clarkhoward.com. There should be some information about it there.

DH has been wanting to get it but we just haven't gotten around to it yet. He does a lot of foreign travel so it would be a good thing for us. I think there may be a fee for calls within the US but not if you're calling to or from another country. Don't quote me on that though, because I don't fully understand how it works.

Sorry, I know I'm not much help at all.

How are things in Germany? DH has a meeting there sometime in 2007 but I'm sure exactly when or where.

Uh oh, Carolyn, I think we just missed that boat:-( . I went to the Clark Howard website and did a search. Apparently Skype, which is headquartered in Astonia, was offering free service to the US for a limited time which expires at the end of the year. It might still be worth looking into, though. I saw something about an annual fee of $299 for unlimited calling.

Skype is supposed to be very popular in Europe and the company made this offer for free service to try and gain popularity in the US.

Thanks for responding Michele! Germany is good, although it took some 'transition time' to get used to living overseas.

I've actually been using Skype for a week now. We put $10 on the account and calls to the US are averaging .02 cents a minute. So it's not free, but it's very cheap. Since we just started, I wasn't sure how skype to skpye worked since no one I know uses it yet.

Thanks for the website! I'll check it out. And if you're considering getting it, it's way cheaper than vongage, although you don't get a phone number with it like you do with vongage.

Anywhoo, thanks again!!

That's weird! We just downloaded the software last week and it was free. Maybe they offer unlimited calls for $299 and pay as you go options as well?

Oh well, so far so good with us.:)

Hi again! I think we were posting at the same time. The Skype offer I saw was apparently for US customers living in the US. I don't think the rates are the same for the US and Europe but, like I posted ^^^ there, $299 dollars a year might still be a good price, especially if you make as many long distance calls as we do.

We have Skype and I talk to my sister in Romania (she has Skype also) for free!!! She just got a camera hooked up also and I could actually see her this morning. It was so cool!!! We are getting a camera also so I will be able to see my sister and dear nephews and they will get to see me. The problem is, Romania is 7 hours ahead of us so I will have to get up way early to speak with them before I leave for school and they will have to see me pre-coffee and pre-makeup...tee hee!!! Skype to Skype calls are totally free and it is very cheap to call from Skype to someone who doesn't have it...like really cheap! This is the best thing ever!!!

Angela, have you ever had a problem with it? Is it easy to sign up? Can you keep your current phone number? Is it supposed to remain FREE, or will they begin to charge you in the new year? I thought I read that the free service was only good through the end of this year.

TIA:)

I've been using skype for over a year now. Calls to the UK have never been so cheap! I stick $10 on my account and it lasts for about 6 months. Bloody good deal if you ask me.

Skype to skype calls are free but I don't yet know anyone who has it so don't ask me how it works!

If you are regularly making international calls, skype is the only way to go.
