I'll be 47 new years eve. I haven't had a period since october fifth. Last year it was 4 months before i started. Does menopause start this early? I would like to try natural creams first. Could some of the ladies here tell me if they use natural products, and how it has helped? I do weight workouts 3 days a week and cardio 2 days a week. I take flaxseed & primrose oils.Any suggestions?

I'm in the same situation, although I just turned 48 and my periods are off and on. Have you had a hormone test? I've heard of them, but haven't had one yet..guess I don't need one to tell me that the big M is around the corner. LOL For my moods I've been using Wild Yam cream with good success, you might want to check your local health food store for it, use as directed.

I won't do any HRT or use soy products because cancer is very prevelent in my immediate family, I'll get through it w/out that stuff. I think you're doing really well with your supplements and exercise. You may want to consider your Omega 3s and 6s and up your intake a bit w/those, can be done w/food or supplements. If you decided to take flaxseed, either get seeds and grind them or take the oil, the pills are a waste of money for the amount you have to take. Also consider adding coconut oil to your diet, its amazing in the health benefits it offers.

Stretch too, keep limber and flexible. I think getting older and going into a new phase of life is exciting and I can't wait til I get fully into it! Congrats to you too!

I started with my hot flashes at age 40, so yes it can start this early! I guess the good way to look at it is you're done with it earlier in life. I started taking 400 IU of Vitamin E twice a day for my mood, which made an immediate difference. I also take black cohosh, and have heard that Dong Quai is good. I've never heard about the wild yam or coconut creams, but might even try them myself. I also have a soy protein drink for breakfast, as soy is supposed to be good for those of us who are going through this.

The average age for menopause for American women is 52, so 48 is not that strange. I am 45 and not really experiencing much. I take ground flax seed, soy just for health anyway. I started using melatonin to sleep better at night when I was 37. I guess I'll try the hormone creams and all if I experience any disturbing symptoms. I can't help you there. I just thought you'd like to know the average age.

Hi Reba,
I started into what the Dr called perimenopause at 47. That was 3 years ago. My Dr. recommended Black Cohosh for the hot flashes and it really makes a difference. I also use melatonin to help me sleep at night. I can really tell the difference when I try not taking the black cohosh for awhile. I don't know what else to tell you. I have two sister in laws who only had menopause symptoms for a year. I guess we are all diffeerent.

I don't think 47 is early at all to be experiencing menopause symptoms. I've read some reports that say we can go through symptoms for up to 10 years before we actually hit menopause. I should state that I am 33 years old. I have started experiencing hot flashes and terrible night sweats...to the point I have to change my clothes in the middle of the night. Oprah did a whole show on menopause and periamenopause (which I think I may have started). I have read alot about soy. The body treats soy like estrogen. It sounds like it is highly recommended for menopause symptoms (please ask your doctor about this...I am not a doctor by any means). I am not looking forward to those years. They seem worse than puberty. Our cycles seem to be hereditary as well. If you have any sisters (i can't remember if you said that you did) ask them and your mom when they experienced menopause. It would give you a pretty good idea when you are going to hit it. Good luck. I hoped this helped.
