Medicine Balls

Hi everyone. I am starting to put together a birthday list for next month (the one thing I don't procrastinate with :) ) and I would really like a medicine ball. The one thing I don't know is what weight ball to get. I know that Cathe usually uses an 8 lb ball in her DVDs. Would you recommend getting an 8 lb ball or a 6 lb ball. I am a little scared of the 8 lb ball because I think it might be too tough, but I don't want to grow out of the 6 lb ball quickly.

Please help with my decision!!

Thanks,

Karin

Do you have workouts that use a med ball now? Do you sub with a dumbell? What weight db do you sub with, if so?

If you don't sub with anything, try subbing with an 8 lb db and see how you like it.

I'd go for the eight, personally. It's not really that heavy.

I agree w/ shellers. Try the dumbbell first. I started right out on 10lbs. I think you would grow out of 6 quickly.

I think I agree with Shelley. My husband got me 2 medicine balls for Christmas, one is 6# and one is 8#. I've barely touched the 6 pounder!

I bought an 8 lb ball by Danskin at Walmart and it's worked out just great for me. It can be just a tad heavy at times, but the 6 felt like it would be too light, so I'm happy with what I have.

About medicine balls: if you get one that feels too 'heavy,' you can make it feel lighter by holding it closer (shorter lever). If you get one that is a bit too 'light,' you can make it feel heavier by holding it farther from your body.

As for weight, it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to use it for cardio workouts as well, like Mindy Mylrea, then 4# seems the standard weight they use. If it's just for ab work, then I'd go with the 8#, and maybe sub a lighter dumbell to use in its place if it's too heavy for some moves, even held close to you.

I have the 8 , 5, and some genie balls.
I usually start out with 8 and if i am dieing pause or drop down to a 5 . You can always buy another one. They are not that expensive.
Wally World sells them,. and i think target and k-mart.
I always find a use for some of them. I was thinking of weighted bars , the bigger ones so i don't have to keep switching weights. They make 22-25-27-30's then i can leave my barbell loaded at 40 or 50.
Like i need any more stuff...

I have a 4, 6, and 8! I find that the 4 works well for cardio workouts as Kathryn said. And for most of Cathe's I use the 8. But I find on some of the ab work Cathe does, like when you have your arms over your head with the ball and are raising one leg and your arms with the ball (I hope you know what I'm talking about), for some reason, the 8 torks my shoulder and the 6 is just right. (Hence why I have 3 balls!) So I suggest you try testing out many of the exercises with dumbbells and then you'll know what you need.

Thanks ladies! I usually use an 8 lb db for the ab work that Cathe does so I think I will get that one. I do want a med ball for Mindy's Boot Camp too. So, I guess I will ask for a 4 lb one too.

Karin, I use my 8-lb'er for Mindy's med-ball cardio stuff and it's just fine. I think it would be fine for you as well - sweaty, but fine.
