Measuring Small at 5 months along

Hi Ladies,

Just got back from monthly appt. w/my mid wife. I am 20 weeks
along this week. My last visit ( 4 weeks ago) all was non eventful.
I was measuring right where I was supposed to be. Today I was told
the baby was "measuring small." I am 5 feet 6 inches and my
pre pregnancy weight is 115lbs. I am now 125lbs. which
has been put on since I was about 10 weeks along. I eat healthy
and some days eat more when really hungry. I didn't get the
impression I was not eating enough but that it was my body.
Has anyone been told you are measuring small? I should have asked
more questions but I tend to become intimated for whatever reason.
I am having a second ultrasound next month which I believe would
have been scheduled regardless. My daughter weighed 6lbs. 8oz.
at birth, full term. I would imagine this child wouldn't be too
much different but question if I should back on my exercise
everyday. I have cut back from 60 minutes to 40.

Thank you!

I don't tend to be a worrier...so I wouldn't let the one comment "measuring small" be a concern...unless it is a REAL concern. There were times in my pg when I measured a little 'off' but I always seemed to catch up.

I know it's hard not to worry, try to relax and the results of your u/s should put you at ease. Subsequent babies normally weigh more. As long as you are eating the right type of foods and moderatley exercising...I'd continue to do that unless told different.

Hang in there and keep us updated!

Hi,
How small are you measuring? With my first, I measured 1 cm small most of my pregnancy. Doctor even had me get an extra ultrasound. The week before I gave birth , I measured perfect and out popped a 6 lb 11ounce baby. With my 2nd, I measured large a few weeks, then back to the right measurement and out popped an even smaller baby at 6 lbs 3ounces. in other words, don't worry and the size of the baby has nothing to do with your execise level.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I have a friend who didn't gain much weight and she was measuring small. Because this was her first baby she was really worried and they kept sending her for ultra sounds. When she had her baby 5 weeks ago, the baby weighed 7 lbs 7 oz! Far from small but just big enough.
You also have lots of time to grow yet.
Lori:)

Thank you Melanie, Shopaholic and Lori.

I feel better knowing this is pretty common. I had anxiety the
night after the visit thinking there was some stunted growth
going on. My mid wife tends to be an alarmist and I should know
her better by now. I was initially not too crazy about her but
in the end, meaning the delivery room having Jennifer she shined.
I stuck with her because she put me at ease and I had a great
experience giving birth. I will have the ultrasound in a few weeks
although I wish I could have today to be sure. I always tend to
think my exercising somehow prevents the baby from thriving which
I know is so silly. Lori, your right plenty of time left for the
baby to grow. August seems so far but as we all know from having
our children the time goes by much too quickly especially once
they are here.

Thanks again,

hi suzanne

i mesured 4 weeks behind consistenly from 20wks thru the end of my pregnancy. i did have a little baby - 5.4lbs. but he is absolutely perfect. i did exercise thruout my pregnancy and i think i gained the right amount for me. my dr. felt like everythingwas proportionately normal. i did have lots of ultrasounds and was very anxious each time, so i empathize. it is reassuring to see the little one, though.

congrats, and best of luck.

Hi Ladies,

Just a quick update. Thank you all for reassuring me. Pregnancy
seems make me more anxious than normal!!

I did see the mid wife this week ( monthly check up) and the
baby is "measuring perfect." My belly seemed to pop a few days
after being told I was small. The Ultrasound was normal too which
was a relief. We were looking forward to seeing the baby which
was great but for the first time had an unpleasant experience
w/the technician. I let her do her thing as far as measuring but
asked a few questions, or ones I knew she could answer. I knew
she wouldn't be able to answer too many questions but kept it
light asking if the baby had all his/her finger's and toes.
I guess she found my question shallow because her response was,
" The baby can live with a few extra fingers and toes..."
My husband and I just looked at each other.
I am moving into the 6 month mark now and feel good. The acid reflux
started and at night I take one Pepcid since the Tums were not touching it. I didn't have it so early on w/Jennifer. It's lousy
but temporary like so many other uncomfortable things experienced
during pregnancy. The baby is kicking up a storm which I love.
Again this seems like one month ahead of schedule from my 1st.
I hope everyone is doing well!

Hi Ladies,

I was told 4 weeks ago I was measuring fine but today was told
the baby is very small. I was told I would need to have another
ultrasound next week. I like my mid wife but she is very vague
at times. I become nervous and then afraid to ask much more.
I am curious as to how accurate her measuring is. I perhaps
should just relax until I have the ultrasound. I know this baby
is far more active all day and into the evening than my first.
The baby feels so strong so much so the kicks are startling at times.
I was thinking this baby must be a good size. I am putting weight
on and tracking the same as last time. I put on a total of 24lbs.
with Jennifer and imagine it might be the same. I guess my fear is
I am exercising too much and stunting the baby somehow? I don't
think that I am being rational since I exercise for only 40 minutes
now a day, everyday. I am worried though.. I know worrying isn't
helping me though.

Thanks
Suzanne

I really believe the measurements are not acurate plus the baby often goesthrough growth spurts then levels. As I mentioned, at one point my doctor tod me that my 2nd baby would be bigger than my first but my 2nd was smaller than my 2nd. I exercised about 1 1/2 hours a dat through pregnancy and had 2 healthy 6 lb plus some ounces babies which was just the right size for my petite baby. You are worrying too much moderate exercise will not affect the size of your baby, just affect your weight gain.
