Mat/Flooring for Garage

I'm so excited that my hubby is making me room in the garage for my "exercise area". I'm sick of moving furniture around in my small living room to workout.

Since the garage floor is concrete, I'm thinking I'll need some type of matting or flooring to absorb some of the impact. I'd like something that is not permanent and can be moved if need be. Any recommedations? I'm also wondering what size I need? I do mostly Cathe step, Firm, and FitPrimes.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I got the foam interconnecting mats from http://www.greatmats.com. They are now carried at Target and (I think) Walmart and for a fraction of the cost. They come in packs of four and cost around $20.00. I started with 12 which is 6 x 8 then added 4 more for 8 x 8. I saw them at Costco as well, which could mean they'll hav ve them at Sam's if you have a membership at either place you might check it out. Congratulaions on your new exercise area!

I remember when I worked at a children's hospital & we re-did the oncology unit, we went to a Home Depot & they donated remnants of black rubber flooring. It wasn't bad looking--it actually had some kind of marble pattern on it, & it was very low impact (mostly so the kids could play on the floor w/o bruising or hurting themselves). Plus if you go for remnants you can get them really cheap.

Thank you ladies -- I'm planning a trip to Costco tonight, so I'll be on the lookout!

Bobbi, I am SO excited about having the garage to work out in. I am an avid exerciser, but since moving to a second floor apartment, I've had to schedule my aerobic & step workouts around the schedule of my neighbors. I can hardly wait to start doing early morning Cathe step workouts again!

I'd be excited too. The one room which has a TV and DVD palyer happens to be a long narrow room and with the entertainment center taking up alot of the space, I have to move my couch and end tables everytime I workout. Pain in the rear! We put in tile a few years back and the mats are wonderful, much better than the carpet we used to have and a must over that tile. I have seen them all over the place and so much more economic than the ones I got. But what the heck. I love the mats. One of these days we are going to sell this house and get one with more space and that's definitely on my list of desired features, a place to exercise and store my equipment. I have it stashed in the laundry room and a closet and I haul it out each time. Pain in the rear # two! LOL!

Hey Bobbi, I feel your pain! I also have to move my coffee table, my end tables and my loveseat to the perimeters of the room. Still, I love working out and it's worth the pain. How I would love to own a home with an exercise room!

I'm anxious to try out these interlockable mats. I hope they are sturdy enough that I don't trip on them. I'm a real clutz!

THose puzzle mats would work great on the garage floor. It will be so nice to have an area just for exercise. I bought my puzzle mats at Walmart for 17.95 for a pack of 4, then had to go back and get another. Then I saw the same thing on sale at Target (just last week) for 11.95. Oh I hate it when that happens. x(

Okay Ducky, sounds like a trip to Target might be on my agenda too! After all, the cheaper they are, the more area I can cover!
