Marla and anyone else....Tooth Sensitivity When Bleaching

Marla(and anyone else),
I was reading your post about beauty secrets and I read that you have trouble with sensitivity when wearing your bleach tray. I'm a dental hygienist and also had a lot of trouble with tooth sensitivity when I bleached so here's what helps:

1. Do not use whitening or tartar control toothpaste when bleaching or any other time if your teeth are sensitive. These types of toothpastes have so many flavoring agents in them that it makes the teeth more sensitive. Combine this with tooth bleaching and OUCHx( When I bleach mine, I start with a sensitive toothpaste for a few days before bleaching - it helps decrease sensitivity.

2. Do not wear it so long. Some dentists recommend wearing your tray all night. I tried this once and I woke up the next morning and they hurt so bad I could have cried. Try wearing it for about 1 hour a day(on your commute to work, doing dishes, etc.) I brush and floss after dinner then put it in for about an hour-it also helps keep me from snacking.:) Gradually, you may be able to increase the amount of time you wear it.

3. Do not wear it on two consecutive days. Alternating days will allow the pores of the teeth to close which decreases your sensitivity.

4. Check the concentration of your bleaching solution - it may be too strong especially if your gums have receded a bit. I use either 11% or 16% Carbamide peroxide.

Follow these tips and you shouldn't have any problems. I hate to see all that money you spent being wasted. Sure, it may take longer to get your teeth whiter but it is worth it. I hope this helps. Let me know. Wendy
