Hello!

I have never asked your opinion, however I have enjoyed and benefited from your posts. Yesterday I purchased the October issue of Muscle Media Magazine...first time. In it is an article entitled: Peak Performance by Brett Hall, R.D.. This article leads the reader through several calculations with the goal of finding ones personal nutrient needs. Is it possible to do such a thing? The mathamatical gyrations that are done in this article are intersting, but I wonder how reliable they really are.

I haven't seen the article, but most all of the dietary recommendations are based on mathematical equations. The bad thing is that the equations are rough estimates--for example, neither of the most popular resting metabolic rate equations take lean body mass into account--one uses age and weight, the other weight and activity levels. Lean body mass is a major factor in RMR!

Tell me a little more about the specific calculations.

Maribeth,

Thanks for taking the time. Okay, I don't have the article in front of me, but I'll do my best to remember the order of the calculations.

I believe the first thing the article requires is that you get your body fat measured. Next, calculate your lean body mass by taking your weight and multiplying it by your body fat percentage. Then multiply lean body mass by 12 to assess your daily caloric needs. Followed by the task of estimating your weekly caloric expenditures ( here they lead you to a web site where you plug in your weight and minutes performing differnt exercises)and divide those calories by 7 for a daily caloric "output" this # is added to the Caloric need # to get your overall caloric "requirement". Oy vey, girl, I hope I didn't lose you, cuz if YOUR lost ain't nobody else gonna follow this mess.

ANYWAY, from the calculations above they then help you set up a nutrition plan that, according to Mr. Hall will help "optimize endurance performance, focus on strength, muscularity..." yada-yada. I hope this helps.

Maribeth,

I hope that I made sense and didn't mangle my description of the article in Muscle Media. I wonder if any one else saw this article and what their take on it was...dmd
