major major pain in the muscle next to your shin

i rode my bike, and caught my left leg under it, and it bent the wrong way. i am going to physical therapy, but they don't seem to help. has anyone ever had that muscle that runs down from knee to ankle on the outside of your shinbone hurt so bad you almost can't walk, and pressing on it hurts like the dickens? it is not a shin splint, the shin has bruises but it is the muscle that is attached to the shin that hurts. how can i exercise it?

Hey Chuckster,

You might want to post this in the open forum, too. I see a lot of threads that discuss and offer advice on muscle pain and injuries. Hope you feel better!

i am new here so i am confused on how to work this place. i did create a new poll....was that good?
have you ever hurt your shinbone? if you have please tell me all details.

A good physical therapist should be able to give you some exercises and stretches that you can do on your own at home to help with recovery.

As for the pain: don't press on it, for one thing!

If you can't walk, most aerobics may be out for a while (step, hi-lo), but you could do stationary biking or swimming. Kickboxing with no impact might work as well.

For weight work, you can certainly do upper body and core, and see what lower body exercises you can do with no pain (ask your PT for suggestions as well).

(And this question---since it's addressed to 'everyone' and not to Cathe---should be posted in the "Open Discussion" forum).

I teach aerobics six times a week, but I have been really lucky about not having too many injuries. Of course, I get muscle pains, but nothing as serious as not being able to walk. I think you should definitely see a doctor/physical therapist and make sure you don't have any serious damage.

Good luck!

If you see bruising at the muscle, that sounds like a tear. Is it swollen?

I'm not doctor or anything, but I've had my own experiences with nearly every type of muscle/ligament/tendon damage due to years of gymnastics.

If it's bleeding internally, that's beyond strecthing for repair. Ice and immobility is typically the prescription.
But your PT would know that, so you may have something else wrong. At any rate, I'm not sure why they're not able to help you.

Sorry about your injury. I don't fully understand what happened (how exactly did you bend your shin "the wrong way"?), but if it's that painful to walk, I think you do need to follow the doc's advice. If you're not happy with your current treatment, maybe you ought to see a different professional and have your concerns addressed. Good luck!

i had a torn tendon in my ankle and had to have surgery or it would get worse. i started limping at work then fell down. every time i'd do cardio there would be major pain. i strongly suggest seeing a doctor. pt cannot solve the problem. i'm glad i had it done but walk very slow at work. it will take 4-6 months to totally heal and be walking normal again.
