Lunch today - what should I eat?

A bunch of us from my office decided to get Indian for lunch today. We have a rather large percentage of Indian folks in the department and this is what they've decided for the menu. Being that I'm not Indian, I'm not exactly sure what's good for the diet. Rice Pilaf and Tandoori chicken should probably by OK. Anything else?

I've noticed you don't see too many overweight Indians, so probably everything is not bad.

Malai Kofta,
Chana Saag,
Rice Pilaf,
Tandoori chicken
Nan Bread
Salads
Pakora
Gulab Jamun for desert.

I looooove Indian food!! I agree that the rice and Tandoori chicken is your cleanest bet.

As tasty as the Pakora is, it's generally deep fried, so I wouldn't go overboard on that, but one won't kill you. }( As I never manage to save room for dessert when eating Indian food, I've never had the Gulab Jamun, but I think it's also deep fried...could be wrong.

As for the Chana Saag and Malai Kofta, I think it depends on how much ghee (clarified butter) or oil they use in the sauce. Same with with the Nan, I think it depends on how much butter they put on it.

This post is making me hungry! :9

ETA: If it were me, I'd probably have a little of everything and spend a little extra time with Coach Sean after work. :)

Mmmmmmmmmm
Some of my favs:
Mattar Paneer
Chicken, shrimp, or vegetable korma
Chicken tikka masala
Chana Saag
Dal makhani

If they have a buffet go for it--it's a great way to sample and it was my introduction into the heaven of indian/pakistani food. It's also quite tasty in it's vegetarian and vegan forms. Can I go with you????

Well, we actually ordered it to have delivered, so if you can make it to downtown Buffalo in 90 minutes, you're welcome to join. I'm sure I won't eat my whole $10 worth!

And remember, the Kofta (MY FAVE!!), is made out of paneer, and I doubt that your Indian restaurant uses low-fat yogurt or milk.

Tandoori Chicken (if you eat meat) is probably your best bet. Or, just take a little of whatever you like, enjoy it, and go easy on dinner tonight!

Oh, God...I just noticed the Gulab Jamun!!! Oh, dear, I'd be a goner!

Oh my goodness. I think I can make Buffalo in 90 minutes! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Indian food. Just try a bit of everything and damn the torpedoes!

In order to feel like a real community, why don't we all just go out, get Indian, bring it back to our desks, and eat our take-out together?

See, I'd do anything for you guys!;)

Well....I had some of everything and it was SOOOOO good!!!! I think I'll need a good workout tonight.

Yeah - Indian food is not exactly health food. A LOT of oil, butter, and other fun stuff goes into it (my husband is Indian - and I've watched him cook). Tandori is okay - as is the rice. But avoid the stuff with sauces. That being said, I cannot go to an Indian restaurant and not get Chindi Pana or Chindi Marsala (curried chick peas). I agree with Shelly - "Damn the torpedos! Full speed a head!"

I'm glad to hear you enjoy the eats. You inspired me to have a bit of mattar paneer and chicken korma. I also picked up a cookbook which shows modifications to clean up the food a bit. Yum

Donna:

What restaurant delivered to your workplace? I would love to have this at ours! ( I work in Tonawanda)

Star of India - it's on Delaware near Sheridan. It's the one all of our Indian friends say is the most authentic. I think I've got everything thinking about soaking Gulab Jamun in rum now. It just seems like they should be liquour soaked instead of sugar. They were renamed Rum Balls by the end of lunch.

Funny you should mention Indian food not being health food. The guy who arranged the buffet is Indian and has proclaimed himself a vegetarian (as of April 1). He says he is doing it for health reasons. So I was over at his desk....and he's got a bag of Dunkin Donuts sitting there. I had a lot of fun at his expense over the frosted glazed donut.

I secretly kinda hoped I'd shame him in to giving it to me...

(just kidding...I didn't want the demon pastry)
