Low sugar, high fat, or Low fat high sugar

When i am on the go i like to take a power bar with me. I have recently come across the questions: Should I be eating Low sugar, High fat power bars or Low fat, High sugar power bars??? OR does it even matter...is it like the same thing. I am talking about two specific power bars: the Low sugar high fat bar is Atkins Advantage and the Low fat high sugar is the Zone bar. I like them both and I was just wondering if anyone knew which was better to eat when I'm on the go. Thanks
Nicole

IMHO the high fat bar (so long as it's not high in saturated fat) with less sugar would be the way to go. You just need to consider it's fat content when planning the rest of your eating for the day. Our bodies need (healthy) fats. That goes with out question. Simple sugars should be kept to a minimum.

HTH!:)

Zone bars are not low fat. I say go with a low fat, low sugar bar like Luna Toasted Nuts & Cranberry, or else a whole food bar like Larabar.

I say: NO BARS! Eat whole foods like apples and carrots and nuts, cheese, bananas, etc.

There are lots of healthier bars out there. Have you eaten Luna bars?? They're about 180 cals/ 5g fat/ 24g carb & 3g of fiber or so. http://www.lunabar.com/products/flavor_book.cfm (I like the Nutz over chocolate to stick in my gym bag) Also, the Lara bars are a bit higher in fat (9g) but they're made from fruit & nuts. http://www.larabar.com

I have on occasion eaten a Power Bar before a long run (they often pass them out after races), but other than that I don't think you need something w/ 50+g of carb.

Can you make some trail mix w/ dried fruit & nuts instead of a bar?? Or try an apple w/ PB?

I guess to answer your question, I'd go w/ the lower sugar bar.

I agree!

Normally I would agree with the poster who said eat whole foods as opposed to processed bars, but I have to admit that some bars are great and they are HIGHLY PORTABLE -- and that is a big deal. Another vote for Larabar here.

Low sugar often means artificial sweeteners.
Low fat often means lots of artificial sweeteners to make up for the taste.
IMO, the best are natural bars (made from all natural ingredients) that are low sugar, moderate fat and moderate protein.

I agree!
Bars are alright once in a while (and some bars are actually good 'foods,' like Vega) but most are just glorified candybars.
