Low cholesterol levels

hopefull

Cathlete
I had my cholesterol levels checked at my yearly exam and they came back very low. total 140, hdl 59, tryglycerides 47, ldl 72. I was feeling pretty smug about this till I got on line to find out what was "normal" for my age and gender. I started reading that there is a connection between low levels of cholesterol and depression. Does anyone know about this? I do struggle with depression. As of yet am not on meds. Just lumping through life with it. I am going to talk to my regular doctor about this on Monday. It was my Gyno that ran the tests and sent me the results. Just got a letter with the results. NO recommendations.

I have a choleasterol level of 128 and the good cholesterol is in the 80's.
I am 41. No meds. Doc says whatever i am doing just keep doing it.
Oh, i am not depressed. Stressed or pmssing at times of course..
I don't know what it would have to do with it.
Maybe the lack of cookies and cake...LOL...
If you are depressed.. Call him/her and talk to them. There are things you can take to help..
Sometimes my depression is my DH!!!
Makes me nuts...

Your total cholesterol has to be much lower than 90 for that to even factor in. I have a girlfriend who suffers with depression and her doctor told her that it was her low cholesterol levels... but her cholesterol is points above mine and I have never suffered from depression in my life! (mine is 140, as well). If you are suffering from depression and your cholesterol is normal, then it isn't depresssion caused by low chol, it is most likely caused by a chemical imbalance or outlook on life in general. :) HTH

I've never heard of that. But I doubt that it is a causal relationship (ie: low cholesterol causes depression), because then many Chinese would be depressed. There may be some factor that contributes both to lower cholesterol and depression.

If you don't feel depressed, I wouldn't worry about it (though thinking that your low cholesterol could be linked to depression could maybe make you depressed!).

From what I can gather by doing a google search, they're referring to cholesterol levels below 160 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). I haven't found a real good source for the information, but I think this is a study on the effects of statin drugs used to lower cholesterol, so if your cholesterol level is naturally low I wouldn't worry about it.

For the past 20 years my cholesterol has ranged between 112 and 122 and I've never had problems with depression. I think you should feel good about your numbers ... especially your HDL ... congratulations on that number ... it may be linked to how fit you are! Deb

My cholesterol is 114, and I've never suffered from depression. My PCP never mentioned anything negative about it being low and didn't seem to have any worries.
