Low Carbers & Friends - November 2010

Tracy - I have about 28 miles over the mountains and through the woods! LOL. It will not be that fun to move. I can't believe how much crude has accumulated. Big garage sale in my future.

Well I have not worked out for a couple days now. Just not feeling up to par. Can't get rid of my swollen
tongue either.

St Louis was good. It was 77 degrees there and a beautiful day. I attached a picture of the arch. It is so HUGE, I couldn't get it all in the picture. Very long work day, though, but I got to rest up the next day.

Rhea, it is amazing how much stuff we accumulate over the years. Now I know why my parents house is the way it is!

OOooh, pretty picture Melinda!

Well, how has everyone been doing? I see that we all must be busy, cause we are not here procrastinating or whatever. The Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle Holiday challenge starts this week, so I'll be very good with my eating and working out. I finally got started back up again yesterday with a workout. (i was rather punky all last week, so I did not workout) Gee, could have the food been affecting me? Duh, of course I was eating terribly, but I think I actually had some sort of virus since my throat glands and back of my tongue was swollen. Slept a lot too. Weird. But I feel great this week. I guess I can't complain if when I get sick, it is only a swollen gland thing.

Well, back to work.
Talk to y'all later.

Hi babes! Glad you enjoyed St. Louis Melinda--and thank you for the pretty photo! We currently are no where near that beautiful weather-wise here--wind storm last night (no power for 12 hours at least at my place), debris everywhere and some downed trees. Then we got a small earthquake today which I didn't feel. It was a big day here!:p

28 miles isn't too bad Rhea, we were looking out farther than that when the property we wanted fell into our lap. But I understand it's a trek to get there just the same! We have junk too and I'm not sure I want to go the garage sale route or the Goodwill/apt. dumpster route! :)

I'm glad you are feeling better this week Rhea! Next week will pretty much be a bust for me workout-wise. Good for you on the motivation to stick to your plan! The holidays are always a challenge. I do well some days, not so well on others! :D

I decided to try Cathe's Oct. 2009 rotation that incorporates some of the STS workouts. Meso 2 Legs today, I'm feeling it already!

Have a great week!

Rhea - I am so glad you're feeling better! Fingers crossed for your BFFM Holiday challenge :D! I know you'll do great on this one, just like you did on the first one .

Melinda - Love the picture :)! Are you going to get to slow down for the holiday?

Tracy - Wow ! I am so glad you're okay :D!!!! Bet it was a hoot without that power !

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone :)! I know we'll all be scarce for a while so I just wanted to get that said before everyone disappeared ;)...

Hi everyone,

Yes, my work will be slow the next week, then pick up a bit. But we are dead the week before and after Christmas. For some reason people don't get health screenings that time of year. Go figure!

I have my clinicals for my class this weekend. UGH! not looking forward to that, but it will just be for 2 days.

It is cold here now, but suppose to have a little warm up. In the meantime, I've decided to do 15 - 30 min cardio + one body part for weight work every day as my workout routine for awhile. I'm using S&H for now to do that. I just feel like i need to increase my heart rate, especially since I don't do as much in the winter. If I can motivate myself, I think it would be good to ride the staionary bike in the evening for 20 min while watching tv, once again, just to get the blood circulating.

Tracy, sounds like you went through quite a time with that weather and then the electricity off. I don't like that at all. We wouldn't have any heat if that happened and it would be cold! We have gas heat, but it is regulated with an electric thermostat.

have a good weekend everyone! Will let you all know how the clinical goes

Hi babes! What do the clinicals consist of Melinda? I hope they went well! I think it's funny that no one wants a health screening around Christmas and New Year's! :D

We are getting down to about 20 degrees tonight--brrrr! We started getting snow yesterday and we've never gotten snow before Thanksgiving in the 20 years I've lived in the NW! We're supposed to warm up by T-Day but it's gonna be dicey until then!

Let's see. We've stocked up on batterries, water, de-icer and DH got the Kerocene heater from the storage unit. If we lose power, we have no heat or water for that matter. Ug!

Winging it on the workouts this week, when I can get them in!

I hope you all have a wonderful, relaxing and warm Thanksgiving my friends!!

OK, lots of news here!!

First, it is warmer here, in the 60s and great! At least for today, then it may go down hill.

Second, clinicals are over. Whew! We were in a long term care facility, basically doing the job of a nursing assistant. Lots of physical care. It is part of a state requirement. I didn't get a lot of sleep and left the weekend with an awful headache. But it is over. I do think that I have some bug and that is part of it. DH is feeling worse than me.

Third, I GOT THE NEW CATHE DVDS YESTERDAY!!!!! I had forgotten about getting them. I did the lower body blast. It is compared to B&G. I guess it's similar in that you really don't do any heavy weights and you are doing higher reps. The beginning had about a 5 min cardio part to get your heart rate up and this workout has a high enough intensity that it will feel like a cardio workout as well, but not too high, so don't worry Lita. OK, this is total estimations, you could look on the back of the dvd for exact times if it's on there, but this is what I got from watching the time counter on the dvd player...
5 min warm up
5 min cardio
30 min standing leg work
10 min floor work
9 min stretch

Give or take a few min on each sections, I am not being exact. There are lots of premixes on all the dvds, but I wanted to go straight through the first time. it was a total of 59 min. I was able to do the whole workout. Not noticing any doms yet.

Not sure if I'll do another one today or wait until Wed.

Wahoo - thanks for the review, Melinda :D!!!!! I really appreciate the highlight on the intensity level, too . Glad your clinicals are over - I know you did a splendid job on them! FWIW, I know that's a very tough thing you did. Carrying for the old/infirm/ill is NOT an easy task at all! Send some of that warmth to me and Tracy, okay :p?

Tracy - Fingers crossed you make it through the weather unscathed and get to stay inside, safe and sound, and WARM!!! Tomorrow we're to be a high of 5 but after that we're finally to warm up.

Rhea - Where you at :(? Miss ya and hope you are well - and that house is coming along!

In honor of the weather, I'm doing something similar to Melinda this week. It's only an average of 40 degrees in my exercise room but believe it or not, I still had to kick my fan on yesterday .

Sunday - DM cardio leg blast, STS MB abs
Monday - 4DS HIS cardio w/ GS chest
Tuesday - 4DS BC cardio w/ GS biceps and shoulders
Wednesday - 4DS LIS cardio w/ GS triceps
Thursday - 4DS KB w/ GS biceps & abs of some sort....

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends !

Lita, do you have heat at all in your workout room? I don't think I could do 40 degrees to workout unless I was dressed in a coat. And 5 degrees is crazy this time of year.

Tracy, I saw your post on facebook about the weather. I'm glad that's not me ;)

No workout today, I was going to but got side tracked doing other things. Heading off to class soon. Maybe I'll just ride the stationary bike in front of the tv.

Yes, Melinda, that IS with heat ;). We have forced air heat - but believe me, the heat seems to get lost in the rising phase . But that was with the door and heat vent wide open.... it's a lot worse when I keep the door shut, believe me :p. Actually, today is colder than they were predicting. It never got above 2, is now -3 and the windchill is -24. Can't wait for tomorrow if it's to be worse than today !

Lita, it's cold enough here. The thing about Ohio is it is cloudy a lot, which is really bad on the mood, especially in the winter. It also gets cold, but the temps you have is usually just for a short time, not all winter. I don't know how you do it. I think I will be one of those snow birds and go south for winters when we retire. I'm getting so I can't stand winter.

Melinda - The gloomy days are definitely something I do NOT miss from PA!!! It's much easier to take the cold when the sun shines so much out here :). Plus, we're closer the sun than you guys are back there so it makes things feel a lot warmer, too.

Tracy - Thinking of you and hoping you're okay, safe, warm, and sound!!!! I was going to call and make sure you and DH made it through the night but I don't have your number here and didn't think to get it at home ....

Rhea - Miss you :(!

Okay, in the spirit of going for it that Melinda started yesterday ;), I did the step portion of Intensity this morning. Now, keep in mind that I am the most CCC of us all :p so....
Here is my summation of the warm up & step portion:
1. There is very little advance warning of step changes coming up BUT most of the workout is familiar enough from other tapes that even I could catch right up the majority of the time.
2. The only time I encountered problems was at the end. You do the warm up and then ~ 20 minutes of step routine, followed by 5 minutes or so of Hiit high intensity step blasts (3 sets). The ending Hiit step blast routines are mega short step routines followed by short blasts. I was totally lost on step combos 1 & 3 but just kept moving which seemed to work fine since they were super short.
3. Definite impact in the step portion (think air jacks, those quarter turn things from STS Hiit, the power turn things from BM2, power 7s & 15s, power lunges, etc) but of course, that's all easy to modify.
4. The music doesn't "speak" to me like some I'm familiar with (like the tunes in BM2 & older workouts) BUT it is FAR superior to the STS music! This actually has a tempo that matches what's being done. It's more of what I think of as techno music - but maybe that's just because there are no words & I'm not familiar with it. Anyway, it's not irritating so that's the big thing :p.
5. For what Melinda and I are doing (shorter cardios w/ wt work), I think this will work well. You have the warm up (about 5 minutes), 25 minutes of step aero, 20 min of floor aero, and the stretch. Of course, there are cardio premixes too but I think they're longer than the ~ 30 min I need for now. Anyway, this looks like it is easier to break down into cardio portions than a lot of workouts .

I think I will do the lower body blast tomorrow then next week do the STS Total Body and High Reps. Then I'll do just the upper body premix/premixes of those two for my 3rd wt day (I refuse to do legs 3 days in any week - and normally refuse to hit them even twice, lol!). But who knows, I may also just do Intensity parts and add on GS like I did this week .

Okay - I'll shut up now . Hopefully this made sense!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE !

Ha, Lita. I JUST finished that same premix and jumped on to comment. You hit the head on the nail with the description. I felt it was pretty high intensity with high impact, but not like in IMAX. Still, maybe a little more jumping than I wanted. But I made it through and for the most part kept up, so not too complicated steps. I think after a few more times I'll be fine. I didn't see how the rest of the workout was put together.

After doing that, I did back work from S&H. I have also been doing 12 pikes on the ball for ab work. It is really helping strengthen my core, which was getting neglected. I've been doing this when I work out for about a week now. It seems to do wonders for me and is fast.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Melinda - I am so glad we agree on that workout ! It's nice to know I'm not always out of whack (like I feel most the time) :D! I haven't done pikes in forever . Is that all you're doing for ab work? (And yes, the impact was more than I wanted but since I can't tuck jump - or do a lot of those other moves to save my soul - it easily became lower impact than it was supposed to be :p )

Lita, I just jump up a bit when the tuck jumps come. I also have my rebounds set up and will get on that for some jumps if I feel like it. I am just doing the pikes when I know I'm not going to take any time for other ab work. There was a time when I would do ab work 3-4 times/week, but now I'm lucky to do it once. But that really is because of the shift to the biking, because when I get home from that I don't do anything else. And when I was doing the STS I wasn't doing abs because that was long enough! I didn't need to add anything else.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Melinda - Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh yes - baby hops do it for me, too :p! I've really cut back on the ab work, too, and haven't noticed any real detriment. I do more modified planks now than anything. They're kind to the low back & hernia both so that's usually what I add on if I have a few minutes.

You were right on with Lower Body Blast :)! I did find the music a bit perkier than the step portion of of Intensity. I slowed down some reps - like on the warrior lunges - because I don't feel the fast ones do me any good. My only negative is that so much of it had pretty much the same count - 8 singles, 15 pulses, 8 singles, 3 count low ends, 8 singles. Very little variation on that, IMHO. But maybe it's because I really don't care for low ends and don't feel they focus on the right muscles that it struck me as being too similar . I will say I was glad to hit the floor & be done with the standing work ;).

Lita, I never counted like you did, so didn't notice that pattern of reps. I don't mind low ends, except those lunges mainly because it starts to hurt my toes on the foot that is back. They are bent too long! I like G&G better as a workout.

DH and DS are out for awhile today, so I may try another workout. We'll see.

It's cold, but sunny today! Yesterday we had a bunch of rain.

Melinda - I'm not sure why I noticed either . Now the problem will be to get over it before I attempt the workout again :p. We're still thinking alike - I prefer B&G too :D. But at least LBB has some variety in it unlike the more straightforward squat, lunge, plie type workout the legs usually get. I plan on trying High Reps on Sunday - but by then I might change my mind and do the other one. You just never know with me ;).

DH and DS are hunting this a.m. so here I am... I have got to get a hobby!

Yesterday I did S&H tricep work, then GS legs floor work. I'm trying to mix things up a bit, got stuck on STS too long and some parts are being missed, especially the back of legs and inner/outer thighs. Also, core has been missed.

I considered doing the high reps dvd or the STS total body, but decided to wait and finish up the one body part/week thing I have going. My core/back is getting stronger from the pikes, yea! I'm telling you, those do wonders for me.

Today is the big rival OSU/Michigan game at noon. Got to watch that. DH will be home from hunting. He is from Michigan, so it's a little exciting in the house.
