Low Carbers and Friends - June - August 2013

Hi sweeet babes!! And a VERY Happy, happy birthday to you Rhea!!!!

My birthday was awesome--DH flew my dad up for a surprise and I cried like a baby!! :D We ran around town, saw friends and lots of family and last week I had to play catch up.

Awesome job on your first challenge week Rhea!! You go girl!! I envy your motivation!! I'm saving my money for some lipo! ;) And I get my annual smasher next week. Here's to our health!!

I really like STS Total Body, a great all around weight challenge. As for Circuit Blast, didn't care for it and shelved it. :p I think Step Fit is an older dvd of Cathe's, I don't have that one.

And I haven't done all of XT either! Today was All Out LI Hiit and it was the first time I had done it. I'm still doing the Undulating rotation but some weeks I have to pick and choose which workouts I'll do that week due how much time I have. I liked it, got tomato head! It was doable and quick. Love that part! Have not done Tabatasize. May not any time soon either. :p

I really like the rotation but I am starting to miss some other workouts. I'm on week 8 I think.

Melinda, congrats on the benefits of no caffeine! I wonder if that's why my dreams are full of anxiety. I don't feel it during the day. Is your alone time over now? Hope you enjoyed every minute of it! I don't get enough of it myself. And congrats on having the whole graduation process done for DS! And as for STS, I say skip the ones you dread. :D

Lita, I love S&H for those really hot summer days when I want to work hard without ssweating to death. I hope it's not that hot for you yet!

Hey, does anyone know why all "diets" say no caffeine? Just curious or can't remember. I drink it black which is about 15 calories per cup.

Happy birthday again Rhea!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RHEA!!!! I hope you have a great day! And great results for your first week on your workout/eating challenge!

Tracy, I really like the HIIT 37 min workout from XT. I have tried the tabatacise and you can adjust how long you want it to be, which is really nice. So I think it can be very short, like 20 min if you just do one round, but don't quote me on that. I don't know why diets say to not drink caffeine, I do know it's a diuretic, so maybe that's why.

So my son got an iced Starbucks coffee and asked me to try it. I just took a sip, it was so strong, way stronger than I'm used to in the first place. I got the most awful headache a few hours later. Not sure if it was some caffeine reaction or what.

Lita, I like the STS total body, but from my memory, I think it is very fast paced and don't like that part. I think we could shorten S&H by just taking off one less set of something on each exercise. I will also skip calf work at times. Oh, and I think I need to quit doing stuff over my head, like tricep work. That is bothering my neck too much.

Hi, everyone :D!

Rhea - Happy birthday !

Melinda - You hit the nail on the head - the STS TB is too fast paced for my liking. Unfortunately, I find that to be true of a lot of Cathe's workouts :(. Didn't used to but now my joints refuse to act like they're spring-loaded. Anyway - 99% of the time I don't do the OH presses on shoulders. I also tend to skip the superman - that really gets my back irritated....

Tracy - From what I just read, some people propose that drinking caffeine raises cortisol (the hormone that stores fat), spikes blood sugar (true for me) causing the up/down insulin cycle, and peps you up then makes you fatigued which leads to lack of exercise, etc . However, others say caffeine in moderation actually assists w/ weight loss. Acc'd to Mayo Clinic, the studies on caffeine and weight loss/gain were poorly done and don't actually prove anything. There - that helped a lot, didn't it :D?

Lita, well, that caffeine info could be true for me when it is in coffee. I always wanted to eat sugary snacks when I drank coffee, I don't get that same feeling with tea. Thank goodness as I get older I am not being so rigid with my exercise. I did an STS workout today and just skipped a few things that would cause more pain than good. If you think about it, when you do one of those workouts, you are doing multiple exercises for each body part on the dvd, so what's the big deal to skip a few? There's a little epiphany, for what it's worth...

It's been hot here, we are getting to where we will need rain soon. Hoping some comes this way.

Hope everyone is doing well.

OK, so I forget, who ordered the new series. I didn't but the deadline is July 2 for early discount, maybe reconsidering.

Melinda - I didn't order it - step is not for me anymore :). But if you go for it, I hope you love it :D!

Lita, I don't think I'm going to get it. I was on the fence about it. I don't want the step workouts. There's maybe 3 dvds that interest me. I think I'll wait for the ones that have ordered to give a review, then I can purchase them at a later date individually, I'm sure there'll be a sale at some point.

Melinda - That's where I ended up, too ;). There was one I thought about pre-ordering, but the shipping was as much as the dvd  so I said the heck with it! I mean, that's just ludicrous, IMHO!!!!

Lita, I think they'll have % off discounts around the holidays, I get emails about it. I think that's probably a good time to buy. I still haven't gone through all my dvds like I said I would a few months ago!

STS is going good. I have decided not to do movements over my head any more. It always leads to headaches, not worth it. And I'm shortening the workouts to about 45 min.

Hi babes! I did order the new series. Call me weird, but I love step work! :p

Thank you for the info/non-info about caffeine Lita! I guess I'll stick with it for now! :D Fortunately, it doesn't cause me to eat surgary snacks!

Cathe announces discounts in her weekly newsletter and I recall that the month of March is customer appreciation month. But I know she offers discounts more often than that.

I hit the pause button when Cathe moves too fast for me to get my equipment together and STS TB is one where I have to do that. So I don't do it if I'm under a time crunch.

I have found in my maturity, that I have lightened up on myself considerably when it comes to working out. I used to be really rigid on getting so many workouts in per week and now I do what I can and am OK with it. Sure makes life a little easier!

So, I found out a couple of weeks ago that being a state worker in WA isn't all it's cracked up to be. Don't know if you heard, but WA didn't have a budget put together during the regular legislative session, nor in the 2 special sessions that occurred after that. And our new governor didn't lower the boom on them like our previous governor did. So, at great risk of boring you all to tears, I have to say that last week at work was pretty awful! We did have to face layoffs in the sense that we may not be going to work come July 1st. We had to get everything done that was due this week, and I had one employee out sick the entire week. We received layoff notices via email and just for fun, alot of us printed them on pink paper. :) Friday afternoon was the longest afternoon I had ever worked, waiting for some kind of news that the budget passed. It never came so we had to change our voice mails and emails and plan not to come in. It cost the state an enormous amount of money to put plans in place and the legislature had no clue. Our Attorney General is going to inform them about what it did to state agencies. He was pretty mad about the whole mess (and so was I of course!)

Anyhoo, the budget passed over the weekend and we went back to work yesterday. And since we got so much work done, I'm taking Wed-Fri off, yippee!

Thanks for listening! I didn't post last week because I was so drained from this snafu....

I'm still doing the Undulating rotation but taking a break from it this week. I did the Lower and Upper Body Tri-Sets Mon and today (one each day) and could tell I'm used to X-Train! So I am going to do the X-t and LIS rotation next. Are you doing that one Lita?

Rhea, how is your challenge going?

Have an awesome 4th you fit babes!!

Hey, Tracy - great to see you ! Isn't it funny (AND a great thing ;) ) how age mellows us out a bit so we're not so driven? Too bad I didn't "get" it earlier - maybe my joints wouldn't be so wonky now :p! THANK GOD that budget got passed ! But what a nightmare for you - not just the extra work and confusion, but the cliff-hanging !!!! Now you'll really have to celebrate the 4th since you know you still have a job! I did the LI/XT rotation right after the XT rotation. I enjoyed both of them but figured after 24 weeks I'd better take a break from them before I wore out their welcome, so to speak :D. I do think by the end I was a bit over-trained with all the cross-training on top of weights. I was pretty sore, tired and fried all over. Thought of taking a "rest" week but have just cut back a day or two for now.

Happy 4th, everyone :)!

Tracy, I'm so glad things got resolved at your work, but man, emotional stress can really drain you. I'm sure you will really enjoy this holiday time with a big sense of relief.

There was a time in my workout years that I exercised EVERY day. I'll bet all us on this forum have similar stories about how we thought about exercise. We are now changing that as we get older.

Lita, I have no idea how many weeks I was on the XT train, but it was quite some time. I also felt I needed to switch things up before I didn't like them any more, which is why I'm doing STS now.

Rhea, I hope you're enjoying your holiday weekend!

Happy 4th!

Melinda - Other than Cathe, you're right ;). The rest of us have settled down a bit - but she just keeps on going and thinking 6 (or 7) days a week is the norm  :p!

Well, the holiday weekend was not as we had hoped. I think we got the whole Gulf of Mexico dumped on us. It was a constant stream of rain that evaporated in the Gulf and blew up here. Good thing, though, is the garden exploded with growth. The farmers will be happy here this year as corn went from barely knee high a week before the 4th to 5 or 6 feet tall. It is crazy!

Believe it or not, we did get a couple bike rides in between storms, just didn't get to go out of town like we had hoped for a bike adventure. I'm sure we'll get it in some time.

Have a good week! I'm finishing up week 4 of meso 1 on STS this week.

Melinda - I'm sure those farmers are happy ! They kinda blew away the old adage of "knee-high by the forth of July" by quite a bit :p!

Lita, I know, it is crazy how big all the veggies are!

We have beautiful weather, finally! Low humidity and no clouds. I think high is 79, perfect!

Have a good weekend everyone. Finished meso 1 from STS

Sure wish MY veggies were growing that well! That does sound like awesome weather! We were to be mid-80s (a tad too warm for my liking ;) ) but now they've changed it to the mid to upper 90s for the next 7 days :(!!!!
