Looking for a healthy daytime pick-me-up.

Hi everyone!

I was looking for some suggestions as to a healthy daytime energy booster, as I seem to crash around 4-5 pm at work.

Lately, I have been drinking a dangerous (for me) amount of Diet Pepsi Max, as well as trying Red Bull, things I had said in the past I would not resort to. I really shouldn't have too much caffeine! I had an addiction several years ago, and it was really unpleasant, really don't want to travel that road again!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jerry

How about fruit or granola bars? Homemade granola would be good, but really anything without high-fructose corn syrup. Also, make sure your drinking enough water.

Are you eating a snack between lunch and dinner? What time do you eat lunch? Dinner?

I used to have that same 4-5 pm slump. I started eating a snack around 4 pm -- a combination of carbs and protein. I have had some trouble in the past with low blood sugar, so a snack helps.

Try that and see if it helps. Instead of the soda, try to drink water -- and lots of it. In the afternoons, it helps SOOO much more than coffee in terms of helping me wake up. You could be dehydrated too.

Yogurt is good - I like to buy the plain, and then add my own sweetener so it's not too sweet. Mix in some fruit with it. Or try some nuts - unsalted.

Yerba Maté or green tea. Both have caffeine, but much less than coffee, and are actually beneficial rather than harmful. As a plus, something in green tea is supposedly helpful for burning fat.

Maca (a powdered root) can give you adrenal support and supply natural energy. It is fairly tasteless, and you can add it to smoothies.

Ditto on the green tea (Tazo's Zen is my personal favorite) but as previously mentioned, be sure to drink plenty of water. I used to fall victim to the afternoon slump until I started drinking more water.

Green tea and water, water, water. Also, make sure you're eating enough during the day and not a lot of sugary stuff because it will make you crash.

I vote again for green tea...I have Choconut flavored green tea from teavana....so good.

I also eat cut veggies with some hummus around 4pm too.

Every day I look forward to my Venti-sized shaken Tazo Iced Green Tea from Starbucks. It cools me off and the taste has really grown on me. No calories, some caffeine, but not too much, just the right amount. I don't like Starbuck's coffee, but the iced tea is a nice pick-me-up.

Me too on the tea! I usually get the Venti iced unsweetened black tea or passionfruit. Some how it just tastes better out of a Starbucks cup. Then I usually have 1/2 c of Ezekiel raisin cereal with a little almond milk, if I eat that about 3:30 then I can make it until dinner at 6:30 without a problem.

I love a handful of almonds and a yogurt at about 4pm. It's very satisfying, and keeps the munchies away until dinner. Also, a big glass of cold water.

Mikkia, I tried the Starbuck's passionfruit iced tea because it has no caffeine, but I thought it had a strong, bitter, unpleasant taste. Is it an acquired taste?

Thanks for all the great ideas, I just picked up some almonds at the store, and will be trying them, as I have heard good things about them.

You know, I have a Starbucks about a mile from my home, might be a good idea to try one of these Tazo Green Teas on my way to work today. I always equate Starbuck's with coffee, which I shouldn't have, so I've never been in there, glad to hear they have green tea, which I like!!

Thanks again!

Well, its a cup of java for me! But a short walk is always good for a pick-me-up....it just always seems hard to get out the door when your dragging.;-)

I hear ya! I have the same Tazo teabags, cream, sugar in the raw, and even a snazzy Starbucks mug (that resembles the paper cup) yet I am still compelled to go to Starbucks and waste more paper products because for some reason (obviously psychological!) it tastes better when I fork over $1.98.
