Longest you been stuck on a plateau?

What's the longest you have been stuck on a plateau with your weight or fitness level? What did you do to get off of it and start lossing again?

I have been battling with the same 2-3 pounds for over 2 months now. This week I increased my cardio so I will have to give it a little more time to tell if that helps. I have 15-20 lbs I would like to loss, but I'm getting so frustrated and often feel why should I bother. Any words of wisdom besides increasing the cardio (and of course healthy eating)? I lost the weight about a year & 1/2 ago, only to gain it back. This time the scale just doesn't want to budge.

Hi Jean:

I wish I had an answer for you, but I'm going through EXACTLY the same thing! Ideally, I could lose 20lbs (according to most sources), but I know I couldn't stay there without starving my body. I'd realistically like to lose 15lbs, but would be happy with 10.

I'm anxious to see other posts, but in the meantime at least you know you're not alone.

P.S. Even following Cathe's January rotation (and clean eating watching portion sizes), I didn't lose anything (pounds or inches)--I do feel leaner though.

According to something else I read, the more times that you lose the same weight, the longer it takes each subsequent time you try to lose it. I have had year long plateaus so I am sure that is NOT what you wanted to hear.

You may not need to increase your cardio but maybe just change what you are doing for cardio. I have re added in taebo and am finally losing again. So just shake up your routine with not MORE but with different and see how it goes. Your body does adjust to what you are doing and will only let go again once it sees something different.

Hope that helps you some.:7

Change up what you're doing to keep your body guessing. If you do a lot of step, try kickboxing or spinning or running or something different.

If you're not lifting weights now, start lifting. Or if you are, switch from all-body workouts to 2- or 3-day splits (or vice versa). Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion Annette. I too am stuck and this may be just what I need to get the pounds coming off.

7 years. Last year's road trip encouraged me to kick things up a notch, & I was so glad I had that kind of motivation b/c it made me realize what a lazy wimp I'd been. I started pushing myself really hard about 3 months before the trip & have kept it going ever since, & I've had results that totally surprised me. I had no idea how much I was slacking until I had a reason to push harder.

Laura it is hard to believe that you were stuck at any plateau, you look so healthy and strong and your so small. I guess everyone likes to continue to make strides and I think sometimes we do get used to doing the same things and life goes so fast you kind of leave your fitness routine in a stuck mode.

Laura,

It is hard to believe that you were ever stuck. You looked great at the roadtrip. That gives me a lot of hope. I know I probably won't ever hit your level of fitness, but at least I know I'm not ready to throw in the towel and give up. Thanks for the inspiration.

Annette and Marie, Thanks for your advice too. I have noticed now that I work out with a HR monitor, that there is a big difference in what my heart does depending on the type of cardio. Certain exercises that didn't feel very intense like walking on an incline can get your heart rate up as much as jogging. So variety is my new plan. Push, Push Push to the next level.

Thanks to all for your help.
