Limiting added sugar - bleah

I've decided to start limiting my sugar intake on anything that doesn't occur naturally in foods. I'm still eating a couple servings of fruit everyday because of all the other benefits of them, and dairy.

Anyhooo.... I'm trying to get used to plain greek yogurt and not having very much luck. I've added some blueberries, but gack! Will I ever like it? I feel like I'm eating a tub of sour cream.

I don't like greek yogurt with or without an added sweetener or fruit. It is too thick. I prefer plain organic yogurt which is thinner in consistency.

I feel the same way about Greek Yogurt - can you eat regular plain yogurt? Or try some of the other dairy or non-dairy varieties - like goat milk yogurt, coconut yogurt, soy, rice, etc.

I tried plain Greek Yogurt and I hated it. I like the thickness, can't get used to the sourness. PLain yogurt I can do. I have been reducing sugar over the past month or so and I am getting used to it and there are things that I don;t miss that I thought I would.

I find the 0% fat Greek is better than the Greek yogurt with fat, it reduces the sour cream taste. If you don't mind artificial sweeteners, try adding some to the yogurt with the fruit. I love Greek yogurt when I add honey, but don't love it as much without honey, however I do recall adding mango and a little truvia and liked it that way too because the mango is so sweet, berries do not have enough sweetness for Greek yogurt imo. Oh yeah, adding banana and a few walnuts with truvia is pretty good too (but better with honey :p)

If you are eating it just for the health benefits, how about adding it to a smoothie with some frozen fruit?

I really like the thickness of the Greek yogurt. Plus it has higher protein and calcium levels than regular yogurt. I don't want to use artificial sweeteners, since I get more than enough of those from my Diet Coke at lunchtime (can't give that up no matter how hard I try). I have the yogurt as my mid-morning snack at work, so I can't whip up a smoothy. Maybe I'll try banana or mango. By the last spoonful, I wasn't hating it AS much, so there may be hope.

Like Dela, I like fat free Greek yogurt the best (in the plain variety). For me it was an acquired taste but now I love it.

Sounds like you are struggling with Greek yogurt's lack of sweetness, but Greek yogurt can also work really well as a substitute for cream or sour cream in savory dishes. You can eat it on a baked sweet potato (or regular potato) in lieu of sour cream (with whatever seasonings you prefer), use it instead of cream in certain cream sauces, mix it in with smashed avocado for a creamy guacamole, or make a yogurt dipping sauce for chicken/veggies/etc. Just some basic ideas. A lot of these savory uses are for portable foods that you can pack for your lunch (since it sounds like you are eating the yogurt at lunchtime).

Try greek yogurt with pb2.... Which is powdered peanut butter. It makes it taste like peanut butter pudding. You could also try my personal favorite: 2 tbsp of organic peanut butter, raw oats, and Greek yogurt layered together like a parfait. If you like honey or agave I guess u could add that but I like it with just peanut butter. Tastes like pb cheesecake!

Oooh I have to try that! I loooooooove PB!

It took me awhile to get used to how Greek yogurt tastes. When I started eating it, I would sweeten it with a little Stevia extract and then add in some fruit. I gradually added less and less Stevia; now all I add is fresh fruit and I love it!

I also use Greek yogurt in place of mayo in chicken or tuna salad.

I like strawberries in my greek yogurt, but they're getting to be out of season. I like bananas in it as well, and I don't even like bananas. Sprinkled w/ a bit of uncooked oatmeal. Frozen blackberries - yum!! Fresh peaches or nectarines - they tend to be pretty sweet as well. And my fave - chopped up bing cherries YUM!!!! Although the chopping up bit tends to turn my fingers purple.

I like Fage yogurt, but if that's the one you're not liking b/c of the sour cream-ness, try Dannon. It's not my fave, b/c it's not as thick, it's more like thick plain yogurt than sour cream. But you might like it. It's cheaper, too.

OK, I found PB2 online.... have you tried the Chocolate PB2? I'd like to order and this seems like it would be tasty for yogurt too. LOVE chocolate yogurt and I'm trying to get my daughter to eat more healthier yogurt.

Yes I've tried chocpb2 ... It's ok but no need to make special order. Just add one tsp of organic cocoa powder or carob powder to regular pb2. That stuff truly is brilliant though!

Hi,

I read on another thread that you can add chocolate protein powder and its supposed to make it better....I have not tried it, but it sounds good.

LOL - yeah, I posted that one. I let my BF try it yesterday and he gagged. I guess it's not as good as I thought.... but he's a junk food addict.
