Lilies

Good Morning Ladies...

Any green thumbs out there know how to tell the difference between lillies and daylillies? I recently learned that I should be popping the heads of the daylillies each night to encourage stronger/longer blooms but my DH insists we have lillies not daylillies. We didn't plant them originally so I don't know. They are all over the yard and just gorgeous.

I am not entirely sure if this is correct, but daylilies have long thin leaves that all come up from ground level. Lilies have shorter thin leaves that protrude from a stem. Does that make sense?

Lilies are grown from bulbs and they have leafy stalks producing several blooms per stalk that last several days for each bloom.

Daylilies are clump-forming perennials. They have straplike leaves and send up leafless stalks that branch and bear several blooms. Each bloom only lasts one day. Some begin blooming in early morning other begin opening in the evenings and last through until the next day.

Did you figure out what they are? I am curious now! What color are they?

In my back yard, I have a dozen daylily plants of a ton of colors (blue, pink, crimson, yellow, white...) and six oriental lily bulbs that will be white and/or pink. This is my first year with lilies and I am really excited! The lilies will get up to 4' tall and the daylilies only 18" to 30".
