Leg Extensions and Curls?

Aquajock

Cathlete
Hi, all!

Just curious if anyone incorporates seated leg extensions with ankle weights, AND / OR standing or prone hamstring curls also with ankle weights, into their quad / hamstring strengthening routines? I'm wanting to vary the squats-and-lunges routine, and I'd like any input regarding form, safe weight loads, etc., as well as any unusual benefits.

P.S. I have no interest in using cable machines at the gym - I'm strictly an at-home strength worker-outer!

Thanks!

Annette

i do ankle weights for hamstrings and glutes.

also i love resistance bands attached to the ankles...

you dont need to go to gym to do the cable work...you can attach resistance bands to your door or whatever and do the same things.

i have long springs on eye hooks on a door frame i use as well as latex tubing for leg work.

How are you doing with the pushups?
i am doing a bunch of yoga classes and get some extra pushup like moves in there too!

are you giving up the sqats and lunges for a particular reason?

Do you think the work you are replacing them with will work all the same stuff or are you just changing your focus?

i do about an hour and half of plie, squats and lunges a week in my sculpting class and i then i added all the ankle weighted stuff on to do at home.... i added them for extra shaping cause i am finding the sqats and lunges dont actually shape any particular thing distinctively.. which i want.

you might add another chapter on with the stepper uppers..

i also use a body bar on an ankle as a weight also.....and a weighted ball behind my knee for lifting when i am on hands and knees.

The floor work of Karen Voight's Great Weighted Workout sounds like just what you need! I use only 1-lb ankle weights and the next day my quads and hamstrings still feel tight! The floorwork section for legs lasts 30 minutes. I find it a great complement to my squats and lunges.

RE: Thanks, Cinza and Stacy!

Hey, you two, thanks for your responses! Stacy, I'll have to check out the Karen Voight tape, when my husband recovers from my having purchased 10 new Cathe Friedrich tapes last month! Actually, I have a good deal with my job - I can use the cash value of my accrued sick leave hours (calculated on my hourly pay rate) to be reimbursed for fitness-related expenses, and that includes exercise videos! I almost never get sick, so I always have a lot of hours to burn off!

Cinza, I think I may be pushing (pardon the pun) out of my push-up slump! I was able to grind out 42 push-ups on the first set Monday night, and I must credit the Cathe Friedrich PS Chest Shoulders and Triceps workout for forcing me to use new positions (i.e. incline) for my pec flyes and bench presses. Hou are YOU doing on yours?

Also, no, I have absolutely no intention of giving up the squat and lunge work - just want to bring extensions and curls into the mix. Am doing a lot of experimenting in my aqua classes with seated leg work in the shallowest area in the pool, and I'm noticing a difference! Always gotta try new things . . .

Have had entirely too much caffeine this a.m.!

Have a great day!

Annette

when i taught water fitness i could never quit making up stuff too....could you do hamstring curls with ankle resistance in chest high water holding the side? that would use a good amount of core strenght too.

Glad to hear you are feeling good about your pushups!
shoved past the slump!

did you try any of the tricpet pushups? they are hell for me.

my modified pushups are becoming easy enough that i am wondering if its time to change my form a little.

I hurt my shoulder in tai chi two days ago though... I got hurt from just holding a position with an outstretched arm for several minutes .....
I have a funny injury...the less i do the more it hurts!

i will have to do cathes ps arms tapes... i have them but havent opened them out of fear!! !!

i did her ps legs a week ago and it wasnt as bad as i thought.. but i am a leg fanatic anyway. upper body will be different.

take care.

I think you could persuade your husband into letting you purchase Great Weighted Workout, it's only $14.95 at collagevideo, how can he say no to that??!! If he does, then by all means beg!! :)

Love to spend everyone's money,

Stacy
