Leaner Legs Static Lunges

Yesterday I was doing LL and my balance always stinks on those darn satanic}( lunges. I had a 35# bar on my shoulders, and was wobbling around so much I couldn't get through them. I picked up 15# dumbbells and it was much easier, I probably could have used 20#. What is the difference here? I could go heavier if I used the dumbbells, yet couldn't handle a bar at 35#? I know my center of gravity must be different. Am I getting the same results? Do I have to use the bar, or can I use the dumbbells? Help!

It seems to me that as long as you keep your shoulders back while holding the dumbbells that they would be a perfectly acceptable substitute for the barbell -joy

I believe you can get an equally effective workout whether you use a barbell or dumbbells with the static lunges.

If you're holding the dumbbells down by your sides, that would put the weight load lower and might help the balance issues. But even if you're placing the dumbbells on your shoulders, it's probably easier because they can't tip one way or the other like a barbell and the weight load is closer in to your body.

Just an educated guess...

I have the opposite problem - I can do lunges easier with the barbell than the dumbells by my side. Any way those lunges are satanic!

I don't have LL yet. (I plan on purchasing the 27-pack by August.) How much worse are the static lunges in LL than in ME? Those kill me!

I would say that the lunges in ME and LL are comparable. The really helacious lunges are in Power Hour.

When you hold the dumbells at your side you have lowered your center of gravity which consolidates the load in an area easier to control. I would imagine that the only sacrifice is in the stabilizing muscles that aren't as taxed as when you have a bar or weights on the shoulders, but the overall weight load would be the same. Just guessing here, though.

Lunges are tough, but very effective for me. I always feel grateful when they're over.

You don't want to risk getting injured holding that 35lb. barbell. Better to do it with the dumbells unless you have a spotter. I don't do lunges with a barbell either. I don't want to risk an injury, it's just not worth it.

I have to agree. When I do the "lower end" static lunges and squats in Power Hour, I can say that I honestly dislike Cathe very much during these segments. I let out a huge moan when I am done because I can barely stand up straight. They are really hard, but definatly hit your legs really well.

I think low end lunges should officially be renamed Satanic Lunges. }( }(
