LauraMax!

Oh Judy I'm sorry, you didn't get my email? Here's what I wrote back to you:

I'm not much of a runner so I probably don't have useful info on which would be better for that. But the arc trainer is definitely my preference over the elliptical. I feel like I get a much better cardio workout from the arc trainer--I think it's b/c the circular movement of the pedals is much wider.

You can change the incline & resistance on both, & both also have a variety of programs (fat burning, cardio, endurance, etc.). But again, I think the broader range of movement gives you a better fat burning workout. If I was gonna shell out the money for either piece of equipment it'd definitely be the arc trainer.

Hope this helps..........:)

Thank you Laura. I tend to agree.

But I am curious to know what runners who have done both think. Comments Some running enthusiasts frown upon arm poles because (they say) it takes away from the lower body work which uses more total calories. They believe that using the arms to assist the workout deterrs from using the legs and therefore amounts to a lesser amount of calories burnedand less condidiong for the legs. The more I read, the more indecisive I get,GEEZ!

Do they mean strength or endurance? If they mean strenth I'd think it wouldn't matter b/c I can't imagine doing the arc trainer & then going out for a run. Traditional exercise philosophy dictates that when you use your arms in addition to your legs during cardio you do burn more calories. Is it true? I don't know.

You also have the option of using the arc trainer without the poles if you want. Some actually come without poles--at least the original ones did, I don't know if they still make them. But even without the arm work it was tougher than the elliptical.
