Hi everyone,

I'm trying to make plans for my upcoming move and was wondering if anyone could give me an honest assessment of how long it may take me to get from the Cedar Knolls/Morristown area to Newark? On Mapquest it says that it is a 20 minute trip but I don't know what traffic would be like. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank!!

Jennifer:)

I would say 20 to 25 minutes is about right. But if you're traveling during rush hour, anything is possible. I'm not sure if you'd be taking Rt. 287 to 78, but those are both very congested highways during rush hour. Sometimes you get lucky, but you'd definitely have to allow more time depending on when you're traveling. HTH

Thanks CoralOcean! DH and I are moving to NJ from Maryland soon and I'm having a hard time knowing how long it will take me to get places and where is really too far to travel for something. I appreciate your response.

Jennifer:)

Hi Jennifer,

For the next several months there is a major construction project going on for Rt. 78 with possible long delays on Rt. 24 & Rt. 78. The newspaper predicts when school starts this week they will have a better indication how long the delays will be. They think the rush hours will be the worse.

I think LauraMax may have a better understanding of the situation because she is closer to that area.

I'll keep you posted if I hear anything. Normally it would take about 20 - 25 minutes. Just wanted to add that parts of Newark aren't safe.

Debbie

20-25 minutes sounds about right, but it also depends on which part of Newark.

And Debbie is right--stay the heck away from 78, it's a disaster. Let me know when you really need it & I'll get you the most direct, least traffic-y route.

If you are coming down the turnpike you can plan on sitting in traffic. That road is terrible for traffic ANY time of the day.

Do you think Mrs. John? I rarely have trouble w/the tnpke (except when it bottlenecks @ exit 7). In fact I love the turnpike for that very reason--traffic is usually pretty light. Did you know the NJTP is our rt. 95? Yeah, NJ has to make $$ off of everything, so we turned 95 into a toll road.

It's the parkway that's always terrible, no matter when, no matter where, no matter why. x(

Thanks everyone!:) I am hoping to go back to school for another B.A. after we move and was thinking about going to Rutgers in Newark but I'm now thinking that I'll just take public transportation and go to the New Brunswick campus. I'm hoping that will be a little more dependable in terms of travel time.

Thanks again,
Jennifer

Not only that, but the NB campus is a much, much better school. I don't know what your field is but RNB has like one of the top 5 political science grad programs in the country. I wish I lived closer, I'd go there for sure.

Not to mention, NB is a very cool town (city?). Great restaurants, very cool night life, historic architecture, good shopping.

Newark is a place where you don't go unless you absolutely, positively have to. And when you do, bullet proof vests are a recommended accessory.

Laura--that is so funny about Newark. When we first started looking for a place to live every time I would mention Newark my husband would say, "you know why they always make jokes about Newark being dangerous in movies, etc. because it is really like that." :7

I had read that NB was the better campus. I was really only considering Newark because I knew that it would be closer and I thought that I was going to drive. Once I realized it would be easier if I didn't drive I went right back to considering New Brunswick. I'm actually going to go for a B.A. in English, but it's funny you should mention poli sci--that's what my first undergrad degree is in.:)

LOL! Well if you watch the Sopranos, you'll notice most of their "business" is conducted in Newark, yet none of them live there (actually some of their fictional homes are literally minutes from where I live).

I am so jealous you get to go to RNB--I've been dying but the commute would just be too much for me, especially b/c of all my stupid night mtgs. The campus is much nicer too--the one in Newark is pretty much all concrete, but the one in NB looks like an actual university. Let me know how you like it......

I work up the road a piece from the NB campus, and I totally agree with LauraMax. It's a really beautiful place and has loads of educational options. I've been thinking about doing my PhD there (but honestly, the traffic heading in that direction on 287 is at a dead stop during the evening commute, so it would really be h*ll).

Good luck! I also agree that you do not want to go anywhere near Newark. Terrifying place!

Marie

OMG Marie that made me laugh--yeah Newark's pretty scary (although the area around the med school is undergoing some kind of rennaisance & you can buy some beautiful homes there dirt cheap).

Newark borders my town, & whenever we ask our PD to do something they always say they can't, they "have to protect the border." I think it's a chant they learn in the academy. You'd think we bordered Baghdad or something.......:p
