Lath and Plaster

Hey All! We moved into a 20 year old house last month that was built by the original owner. There is beautiful plaster work in the ceilings and lovely crown moldings but the plaster walls are scaring me. I tried to gently pull a nail as I was preparing to paint and pulled out plaster about the size of a quarterx( I want to start hanging pictures and shelves but being completely unfamiliar with plaster walls am a bit hesitant. Any advise as to the best way to hang pictures and shelves on lath and plaster walls. TIA!

Thanks so much Emily, I've bookmarked the link. I guess I'd better make a list and head out to the hardware store, who new hanging a picture could be such a multi step process.......
