Lasik for Presbyopia (reading & farsighted vision)

Hello, I am specifically wondering if anyone out there has had Lasik for Presbyopia. I did not start needing glasses until I was in my 40's & it was specifically for reading. My distance vision has recently gone downhill & I am am wearing a slight prescription for this. I have been wearing monovision contacts for a month & was close to making a decision when I talked to my regular optometrist. He said he hasn't met anyone who was happy with Lasik who had my type of prescription. My prescription is +3.25 for reading & +1.50 for distance (at least these are my contact strengths). I'd really like to have this done, but now am scared! I went for a consultation with a board certified, reputable opthamologist & he felt I was a good candidate. I would appreciate any input. I don't want to make a mistake I'd regret, yet I don't want to miss an opportunity to be glasses free! Thanks so much.

One thing that you need to keep in mind is that Lasik corrects imperfections in the cornea, but part of the reason for reading glasses as a loss of ability of the muscles in your eye to focus as you age. This is why so many people need reading glasses as they get older. With your prescription it sounds like you have components of both. The lasik can probably eliminate your need for distance glasses, but you may still need reading glasses. I'm sure your eye doctor/ lasik provider could give you more insight based on exactly what your needs are.

Hi. I had the lasik done in monovision about a year and a half ago. I had not been in reading glasses before the lasik, but my dr. said that if he didn't do it that way, for some reason (to do with lasik) I would be in them pretty much immediately, so he really encouraged me to do it this way. I remain glasses free, but I think my distance vision has suffered because of it. It's just not as good as it used to be, and I think it's because of the way my eyes have to work together. So, if I were you, I'd consider it seriously but know that you may be compromising. It is very nice to not worry about glasses or contacts!!

good luck,

I had a chat with one of the top Lasik surgeon's in the country and he said he doesn't recommend monovision, usually. Then he pulled out his reading glasses and said it's best just to correct both eyes similarly and wear reading glasses. I couldn't afford the surgery at the time and decided to at least get contacts so I could ditch the bi-focals. I constantly have to pull out the reading glasses which is how it would be if I got the Lasik. Sometimes, I actually prefer when I get home because I remove the contacts, go back to my bi-focals and, if I want to read, I just take off the glasses and put the material right in front of my eyes. Putting on eye makeup... oh Lord. Mom was right. It IS Hell to get old. I can handle the wrinkles, brown spots, etc. but the vision issues make me nuts.

Some self-satisfied 20-something punk at work said to me "I won't have that problem because I have 20/20 vision." I laughed and laughed. Hope he visits me in The Home so I can laugh some more.
