Lack of weight gain in 4+ weeks, need some reassurance

First, I know this sounds rediculous coming from a pregnant mom, please don't roll your eyes as I really am worried about this. Anyway here's the deal:

So on my trip in San Antonio my SIL was kind to let me workout at her gym where she works. It's a high class gym, anyway in their locker room they have a seriously nice scale you can weigh yourself on. I did and weighed in at 128.5 at 21 weeks - that was great I started at 118 prepregnancy. Well I've been weighing myself off and on, but not to much in the last 4 weeks since I've been home. I weighed exactly 128.5 on my home scale when I got back from San Antonio as well - just to add. I had previously been gaining about .5 a lb a week. Well the last time I weighed myself two weeks or so back I was 129.5, didn't think anything of it. Weighed myself mid last week I was 128.5 again. This morning I'm now 129. It only occured to me on saturday that that meant I wasn't gaining any weight since 4 weeks ago, or I've gained .5 a lb. I have NOT been dieting, my workouts have been not great 2-3 a week the last couple weeks. I don't know what is going on, and I'm worried. On this thursday it will have been 5 weeks since I know I last weighed myself at 128.5 and that means I've really barely budged the scale. My next dr appt is wednesday so I'm gonna talk to her. But I'm really nervous about this. I am wondering now if it means I have to stop working out, as I really don't think I have more room for food. My last visit the dr said the baby gains .5 a lb each week in the third trimester. I have 14 weeks left for her to gain weight so I hope that I'll turn a corner and start gaining appropriately again. I'm really worried about premature labor and it's association with low weight gain by the mother... Has anyone else here dealt with this? What did your dr/midwife say? I can't wait till wednesday to get some answers to ease my mind... that's my neurotic side I guess. Anyway I'd love to get some answers. I'm really upset, and especially worried she'll make me get off exercise.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your thoughts!

sidenote: this is throwing me for a loop as I gained 40lbs last time and had NO problems packing it on

Hi Julie,

Believe me, I'm not rolling my eyes at you! I would be very worried if I were in your shoes, too. I'm not saying there is anything to actually worry about, but just that until I had some medical reassurance, I would be concerned. I don't have any answers for you, but just wanted you to know that your concern is not unfounded. Do you have any sense of your uterus having grown over the past 4 weeks, even if you haven't put on weight? Does the top of the uterus seem higher?

Keep us posted on what the doctor says on Wednesday.

All the best,
Sandra

RE: Lack of weight gain in 4+ weeks, need some reassura...

I guess in some cases, lack of weight gain could signal a problem but I have read of many women who don't gain much weight at all and have happy, healthy babies! It's depends on the woman and the pregnancy. Each pregnancy is different! Let us know what the doc says but I would think it's fine! :)

Julie, I think your belly looks rounder in the 24 week picture. As Wendy said, it's probably nothing to worry about; everyone gains at a different pace. At your appt on Weds the doc will probably measure your fundal height to make sure the uterus itself has grown. This doesn't necessarily have to be accompanied by maternal weight gain. Hang in there, and let us know what the doctor says.

How did you get your pictures to post directly to the forum?

Cheers,
Sandra

I don't have any answers for you either but just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking about you. Try not to worry (easier said than done). Please let us know how your appointment goes tomorrow. (HUGS) to you.

www.photobucket.com let's you host pics there for free, and each pic uploaded has a link to it that you can put anywhere you want online. Why you want to share some pics? ;)

sidenote: I talked to one of DH's classmate's wife, her husband is doing his medical rotation in OBGYN right now and she told me that they were saying weight wasn't what they measured by, but the fundal height. So she said don't stress about it, and proptly joked with me that I"d probably pack on 5 lbs next week ;) LOL love girlfriends - so I feel much better now, but I'll let you know how the dr visit goes.

RE: Lack of weight gain in 4+ weeks, need some reassura...

julie,

i wouldn't worry to much about the lack of weight gain. some women just don't put on alot of weight. during my first pregnancy i gained 25lbs there were quite a few times i had no weight gain during my dr. visits and all was well.

UPDATE:

So I saw my dr today. She said I looked fine, and was measuring on track so not to worry about my weight. She said the next trimester could make up for it, but that measurement was the biggest indicator for the baby's growth. I feel MUCH better now :)

RE: UPDATE:

Too funny - I was just about to post and see how your appt went and couldn't find the thread because you had just posted and bumped it to the top!!

Glad to hear all is well. I had been thinking about you and hoping for good news. I didn't know if all dr's do the measurement thing, but it is a great way to make sure that the baby is growing. I used to wonder how they know if the weight gain is due to the baby growing or to me eating too much ;-) With the tape measure, I guess they get a better indicator.

I bet you're relieved!! Now, go eat a sandwich!! :)

PS Make sure you're staying hydrated, too. Sometimes that can affect your weight, and it's really hard this time of year when we tend to be more active in hotter weather to remember to drink lots and lots!
