my sister wanted me to ask a ? she had knee surgery over 10 years ago and still has atrophy in that leg. what's the best way to get her legs more equal in size? should she work out one leg differently than the other?

laura

hey laura. I'm a physical therapist and I've treated many post op knee surgery clients. I'm surprised your sister didn't have any PT after her surgery especially if her leg was inclined to atrophy(depends on her condition and activity level). Anyway she should have a program developed that includes straight leg raises in all four planes with ankle weights when appropriate, bicycle and closed chain exercises like squats/leg press. That would be a good start. One more thing ...this all depends on her current level of knee/lower leg condition and if she is experiencing any pain, anywhere in her leg. Good luck,Dorothy.

hi
she wants to make it so that her legs are somewhat equal in strength. its her right leg injured from soccer years ago. should she work that leg harder than the other?

thanks
laura:)

hi laura. She should work the injured leg to it's maximaum capacity as long as she is pain free (normal soreness excluded). if the other leg has a greater girth and/or strength then she shouldn't push it heavy on that leg ...just medium weight to maintain the level that already exists...till the other leg increases. take care dorothy
