Good Morning!:)

My back is still feeling funky (see yesterdays thread), so no workout for me today:mad::mad::mad:
I was planning on doing 4 straight days this week and taking the weekend off, now I'm not sure what I'm going to do, except take care of my back.....

The kids and I are off of school again today:):):)

I will try and check back later!
Have a happy Tuesday everyone!

Okay...

Marcy, enjoy your new DVDs!!! :) MMA was the only one I was slightly interested in, too, so I am excited to hear your review! I am going to try to do something every day from now until New Year, and I am going to try Budokon... I am sorta scared to send me your grace and confidence vibes please! ;]

Gayle, 3 questions: how long is the Starting Strength program, what is it and do you have a link for it? :p
OH, and before I forget: did you get the change to read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society yet? How much did you cry/laugh/cry/laugh again?

Rhonda, got your pm and you ARE MY NEW BEST FRIEND IN THE WORLD! That is, by far, the coolest thing I have ever seen. :D

Jane, until you mentioned it I totally forgot that I have HSTA. That's another one I'll get in before the New Year! I think I'll sub swings and snatches for all the step cardio though. My knees don't like that step.

Deanie, believe me when I tell you that I FEEL YOUR PAIN! Where does it hurt (lower back?), and did you hurt it while twisting or bending over? If you did, I have some stretches for you - but only after you iceiceice. You may have to take some time off. :( because I know how that feels. Many, many hugs to you, friend! I am so sorry.

BBL,
Melissa

Hey Hey Hey

I am in Big Brothers Big Sisters and my little sister wants to go ice skating so that is whats on tap today.

I am all kinds of sore today. I did yardwork for most of the day yesterday. I pruned perennials and raked and other things. Hopefully our house will be on the market by mid January.

My Shock Cardio is scheduled to arrive today! I am going to FL for Christmas. I get to play with the baby.:D

Deanie- I can't believe the vacuum took your back out. I hope you feel better soon. So what is the Jewish school calendar. Were you out for Chanukkah (sp?). Are you out for NYE and NYD?

Melissa- Glad you thought they were interesting. I have heard with enough practice you can actually do tricks:eek:.

Marcy-I am going to preview them and maybe once a week we can do the same one.

Jane and Gayle- Helllllo.

Good Morning!

I did Altar of the Heart this morning.:D Had a great practice. Did headstand for 33 seconds! A new record! Also did shoulderstand in lotus again. This is such a relaxing practice and the scenery and music are beautiful. I also feel so stretched out.

Melissa - Confidence vibes coming your way! I'm sure you'll do fine. Just for you, I'll do one of the MMA ones first and give you my review. I'm expecting them today, so if they come, I'll do it tomorrow.

Rhonda - Just pick the day and I'll do the same one with you. It's so great you are a Big Sister. Have fun ice skating! I wish I was going with you. I love ice skating. Took lessons when I was a kid; got a huge blister and never went back. It's also a great workout!

Deanie - So sorry about your back!:( Get plenty of rest and hope you feel better soon.

Waves to Gayle & Jane!

Marcy

Hi Everyone!

I had a great run last night. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be. It was in the mid-50's and there was a gorgeous sunset ~ all fiery reds and oranges. Wish I had my camera with me!!

Tonight I'm doing a leg workout. It will either be GS Legs, PLB or something from STS.

I ordered Shock Cardio but I haven't received it yet nor a shipping notice. I guess I will be surprised when it comes!! If it doesn't come by the middle of next week, I will check on it. I think I chose the less expensive shipping option.

Deanie ~ So sorry to hear about your back. Enjoy your day with the kiddos and take it easy.

Melissa ~ My shoulders are killing me from HSTA. I think I went too heavy on the overhead presses. Yikes! On the last circuit I did kettlebell swings with my 44# because my ankle was starting to feel a little funky (although it feels fine now).

Rhonda ~ Have fun ice skating with your Little Sister! What fun! I remember ice skating as a kid on an outdoor rink that was near my grandma's house. After ice skating we would go to see grandma. She would serve us hot chocolate in little tiny china cups and give us cookies! Great memories!! Have fun in Florida!!

Marcy ~ CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW RECORD! I could probably hold a headstand for 1 second. Good for you! I'm interested to hear your reviews on Shock Cardio. I'll get mine someday!!

Waves to Gayle!

hi again

Marcy:::: WTG on your new record!!!!! you rock!! :)

Melissa:::Yes, please send me stretches! that would be great! thanks! I read the GLPPS and really enjoyed it!

Rhonda::: Have fun ice skating!!! that is so great you are a Big Sister!!! The second date my DH and I had we went ice skating!....fun!...although I think that's also the last time we went!!LOL .... I hope all goes well for you with you home. Have fun in sunshiney florida!...even though I work in a jewish school, we follow the county schools for the school year (except the teacher professional days) so we are off thru Jan. 4th!!:):):) they cancelled school for tomorrow already! Two weeks of vacation!!!! WHOO HOO! How long are you off for?

Jane::: I didn't realize you had STS! Have you done it, but not in order? I hope you get STS cardio on time. I read on one of the other forums that you may get it, but not get a shipping notice. Surprise!!

waves to Gayle!!

Just stopping in for a quick second to say that IT IS AWESOME YOU CAN DO A HEADSTAND FOR 33 SECONDS! Those are so friggin' hard!!! You go, girl!!!

Melissa

Thanks everyone for your congratulations! I'll say it again, consistency is key in anything you do. I actually got right up today on the first try and felt like I was able to keep lengthening. I felt so tall standing on my head!

Deanie - Have a great vacation!

Jane - How heavy did you go on the overhead presses in HSTA? From your posts, it sounds like you had a wonderful childhood with great memories.

Marcy

Deanie ~ I've had STS from the beginning. I think I did the first workout but then when things with my parent's got complicated I stopped doing it. I needed to do shorter workouts. I'm going to do Meso 1 Legs tonight.

Marcy ~ I did 40# on the overhead presses (not as heavy as Deanie :)). It didn't feel bad when I was doing it. For some reason my shoulders were sore from doing Insanity the day before so maybe that is the reason too!

I had a very magical and wonderful childhood. I was blessed with very special parents.

I did Diva today - Jane, I was going to do HSTA, but when I pulled the DVD out and saw how long it was... I just couldn't do it. I have been so spoiled w/ kb's, how much you get done in such a short time, dread factor set in big time.

I hope that my kids appreciate me the way that you do your parents, and I hope that I show my mom how much she means to me. We try to build memories with them, but you don't feel like they really care while you are doing it. You have no idea how your posts make me feel when I see how you take care of your parents. :)

Have a great one, guys!

Melissa

Jane - I think the last time I did HSTA (a long time ago!), I used 30#. This was with the barbell, right?

How is the aide working out with your parents? How are your parents doing?

Melissa - Yes, KB workouts are definitely time-efficient.

Marcy

Melissa ~ Those leg presses killed me in HSTA but I do like the weight work and the cardio.

I think the one thing that really impressed me about my mom and dad was the trust they had in us. They never told "don't do that" and "if I ever catch you doing that..." kind of thing. They gave us tools and let us go out there and find our own way even if it was the wrong way or the way they would not have chosen for us. We did lots of reading on Sunday mornings from Guidepost stories, articles in the newspapers and whatever they felt was meaningful at the time. Then we would discuss the stories. I remember at the time not liking it but I think it really helped in forming our minds to make the right choices about peer pressure and stuff like that.

Incidentally one of my sisters (the one that lives in Illinois) is not on board with how we are caring for dad. She told me a couple of weeks ago that she does not agree with what mom is doing and she does not agree with what me and my sisters are doing. I told her that there was probably lots of stuff that we did that mom didn't agree with but she supported us anyway. She just doesn't get it. I think she feels so guilty that we are doing so much and she is doing so little but when you ask her to help out financially she won't. When she was down here in October she told me that this trip cost her $2000 from the plane ticket, groceries she bought for mom and lost of business (she has her own business). I don't get her at all.

Marcy ~ Yes, that was with a barbell.

The aide is working out really well. My mom really likes her. She is 60 or around 60 so she is closer to my mom's age. Mom has left her alone with dad to go shopping. That was a HUGE step for my mom.

Mom is doing good. She is still a little stressed out but it's only been 3 weeks since the aide started so hopefully she will relax and go out more. Dad is declining. He has less control over his bladder now and he cannot speak really well. He won't remember words or he says them wrong. Most of the time he doesn't know who I am. His walking is very poor. The last month or so has been really hard.

Jane - I'm glad the aide is workout out and your Mom is doing well. Sorry to hear about your dad. You're lucky to have such special parents and you're doing a great job taking care of your parents. Try not to let your sister get you down. Just know that you are doing the best thing possible for your parents. It's always the ones that complain the most that do the least.

Marcy

Jane:: (((HUGS))))about your dad. I'm glad the aide is working out and your mom is taking advantage of her. I know how hard it is, and taking it one day at a time is best (at least for me),. It must be so hard for you, and I'm glad you and your sisters are close and can lean on each other. I am sure your parents appreciate how much you do for them. Don't worry about your sister, she may be having a really hard time dealing with all of it. I admire your parents and the way they made your childhood so special. I feel more like Melissa though, DH and I try to make memories with our kids, and they don't seem so interested...hopefully we are making an impression and just don't know it!

eta; I wanted to add, maybe you can look into medication? My dad was put on some med's for Alzheimer's' (unknown to my mom, but that's a diff. story) and it seemed to help a little (with the brain stuff, not the physical losses he'd had).....just a thought...

Thanks Marcy and Deanie!

I know my sister is having a tough time with this. She is the most emotional one out of the 4 of us. I think she throws up the tough girl act as a defense mechanism because she is really hurting inside. I just wish she would tell us that.

My dad is on Namenda. We did notice a slight difference when he was first started on it. He is less agitated now which is good. His main issue is always wanting to go home and worried if the doors are locked.

Deanie/Melissa ~ I bet your kids will appreciate the memories that you are creating for them. Just because they don't seem interested now, doesn't mean they won't appreciate it when they are older.

{{{Jane}}} I'm glad the aide is working out for your mom. You really have a great family. Your parents are really fortunate to have you and your sisters looking out for them. :) I also love to read your childhood stories. :) Your run last night sounded fantastic.

Deanie - I hope your back is feeling better. That solidifies my belief that housework is evil...plain and simple. ;) Starting Thursday, I'll be off from work until Jan. 4 too! WOOHOO!!! :D:D:D

Rhonda - I hope you had a blast ice skating with your little sister. :) We have a pond that we skate on and it just started icing over well last week. I've seen people already out ice fishing on some of our local lakes, but I think I'll give it another week of freezing weather before venturing out on the ice. Have a great time in Florida! Enjoy your time with the baby. :)

Marcy - More mega ^^^'5s on you headstand PR! AWESOME!!!!

Melissa - I've developed the same dread factor with longer workouts. I did read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and really liked it a lot. I had a hard time putting it down when I started reading. :)

Starting Strength is a book and lifting program by Mark Rippetoe. It's geared toward helping novice lifters build strength and uses the basic big lifts - deadlift, squat, press, power clean and bench press. The book goes into great detail about the mechanics of each lift, and some assistive lifts. It also includes a short chapter on how to program training the lifts. I have to go back and re-read it, but I think he recommends something like lifting 3 days a week (I think) with a rest day between each.

You can do the program for as long as you like...generally as long as you're making progress. You basically do 3 lifts per workout for 5x5 sets (except deadlifts where you do 1x5).

Here's Rippetoe's official SS site: http://startingstrength.com/index.php

Here's a fan site with some good info on the program: http://www.startingstrength.net/workouts/

I didn't get a workout in tonight. :( I was in an all day meeting up north today and got home late. Buuuuuut...I DID get my bumper plates today!!!! My bar should come tomorrow!!! :D:D:D

Does anyone have a squat rack? I'm thinking I'll need one, and I've been looking at a cheapish one from Powerline. Anybody have it or one like it? http://www.amazon.com/Powerline-PSS60X-PowerLine-Squat-Rack/dp/B000VLKOB8

Have a great night everyone!

We had a great time skating. I only fell when someone ran into me. I ran into my old mgr from a pt time job while we were there. Sis did a great job of teaching his twin girls how to skate.

Marcy- Whoop. Whoop. You are the woman!

Jane- I am glad things are working out with the aide. I am sorry that things are declining with your dad, but happy for you that you have wonderful memories. You have to remember that very rarely everyone is going to be on board with your decisions. Keep doing what you are doing. It really warms my heart to see the lengths you go to for your parents.

Gayle- That is so cool. The only thing we can skate on outdoors is concrete. Thanks for the link to the program.
Deanie- We are out until Jan 4th.

Melissa- Your kids will appreciate your efforts later on. They probably appreciate it now but just don't know how to verbalize it.
