Hi Keta. I've been reading all the threads by Maribeth, and your posts interest me just as much. I remember reading just the other day where you wrote about fiber -- getting a certain amount daily. I tried to find it last night, but couldn't. Could you please tell me what the amounts were?

Also, could you please expain your fiber rule to me? Is it every meal must have 3 g. fiber, or every THING that goes into your mouth must have 3 g. fiber? Thank you for your time. :)

Hi Hollie,

Daily fiber requirements by the FDA are 25 grams a day. The FDA is considering increasing it to >= 30 grams a day.

Ah yes ... the fiber rule. This rule is one I use a lot that keeps me out of trouble and honest, plus helps me get my daily requirement.

It's really simple ... for any processed foods, I include breads into this category, I will not eat it if it has less than 3 grams of fiber per serving. If it has 3 grams or higher, then it's ok. Now, there are some things that this rule will never make it ... like flour tortillas. That's ok, I just pick the highest fiber amount with the lowest calorie and salt amounts. You'll be amazed just how little fiber is in our daily foods. That goes for pasta too. ;-)

I hope this was helpful. :D

Hi Keta! Yes, it was very helpful. You're right -- I was very upset when I looked at my package of whole wheat flour tortillas and there were only 2 grams of fiber for ONE tortilla! :-( However, today I've been very diligent about my fiber intake, and as of right now, at 1526 calories, I've had 35.5 grams of fiber!! :) Yay me!!

Okay, but I got to thinking today, what about meats/eggs? Do you eat those since there's virtually no fiber in them? Yes, I eat beans...I love them! But, I also like chicken, egg whites, and occassionally beef. What are your thoughts? Thank you again!

Hi Hollie,

You're very welcome.

As far as meats and dairy, you bet ... I eat them. I have beef once or twice a week. I eat chicken once or twice a week and I eat ground turkey once a week to once every two weeks. I do eat eggs, but mainly around the holidays, otherwise, I have to be in a mood and craving those little buggers.

Like this week, I’ve having beef twice (a roast on Sunday and tomorrow is a 5-oz steak broiled)… chicken once and ground turkey once. The rest is all the other stuff that makes up a wide variety diet. Did I say that Friday night’s are pizza nights? I don’t count that in my meat / dairy. That’s just my little secret. Kind of like if you have a diet coke with a candy bar, the calories don’t count … hehehe … ;-). Oh yes, I’ve got to have some simple pleasures after all. :D

Now skim milk ... 2 - 3 cups a day. If I have a really hard workout, I've drank up to a 1/2 gallon of milk ... but I think that is more that my body is just craving it after one of my martial arts events that knocks me on my butt for days. Yogurt, I try to eat once a day - I go more in sprits than anything else. Now cheese ... everyday at least once a day, no more than twice a day. The cheese that I eat is mostly fresh Parmesan cheese. I do eat light shredded cheeses during the week maybe once or twice … that’s about it in the cheese department. Don’t do Velveeta or any kind of processed sliced junk … I just don’t like the taste, way too much salt, calories, fat, and just icky stuff.

The dairy and meats make up a small part of my diet but it does take up a lot of fat in my diet. Especially the cheese, I cannot give that up, I just cannot do it. * hangs head in shame. *

That’s the great thing about moderation … you can have your pizza and eat it too just ever so often. ;-)

Keta. :D

Thank you again!!

Ah yes.....CHEESE!!! In a perfect world, cheese, ice cream, and pop tarts would be my "health foods"!! LOL Okay, back to reality!

I appreciate that you took the time to go into more detail. Well, I'm done eating for the day, and nearly 40 g. of fiber! Wow....I'm impressed with myself. :7 Let's see if I can keep up the fiber intake. :-jumpy
