KB Question

I have a question for all you KB'ers ............after watching a few short video clips on Youtube, I am wondering if the KB workouts are hard on the back .
I've had some issues over the last few years with my back and everything is good now....but I have found I need to avoid deadlifts and heavy barbell's on my shoulders......and a few other exercises.
The swinging of the weights looks like it could be iffy for someone like me, but I also find the whole idea of the KB-type workouts interesting. Am wondering what you all think and also IF it's something I should try, what dvd's are recommended, also what weight is a good starting weight ??

THANKS!

Becky

Hi Becky,

I have been working with kettlebells for over 2 years now and have never had an issue with my back. In fact, I have heard that it is suppose to help people that have back problems.

Since you've had back issues in the past, I would strongly suggest finding a certified kettlebell instructor in your area and meet with them for a couple of sessions. Form is key when working with kettlebells and I would hate for you to hurt yourself without having proper instruction.

If it is something you would like pursue I would suggest either a 15# or 20# kettlebell. Art of Strength has some great workouts. One of the them is the Kettlebell Way and I know that they offer an instructional dvd(Kettlebell Training Clinic Volume 1) that would provide you with the fundamentals that you need. The website is www.artofstrength.com.

In any case, kettlebells are a great way to add variety to your workouts.
