just got DSL .....

Isn't it great! I don't have DSL, but I'll never forget the first time I surfed the net after hooking up with Road Runner. The difference is shocking! Happy internet surfing!!

Michele :)

It is soooo much better than dial-up isn't it. The major phone company here in philly is offering it at an insanely low price now-$14.95 a month for a year. Of course, I can't get it at that price cause I already have it. I love it though.

i am still waiting for dsl in my area. i want to drop this cable internet only b/c i think the company is a rip off. they just doubled my cable bill for the tv which means with the interent and the tv i would be paying almost $120 a month. while my mom who lives 10 mins. on the other side of the city pays barley $20 for her verzion dsl and it works just as a good. disadvantages of living in centeral virginia i guess.

A word to the wise...

Your computer is now connected to the net whenever it is turned on.

Please investigate virus and spyware protection. Also check out a firewall. No need to let nasty net citizens into your computer!

Dave--

What programs do you like for internet protection? We have Norton antivirus and I know we have a couple other spyware/adware programs that we run routinely. I don't know much about the computer so my husband usually takes care of this stuff.

Congrats Phyllis! I went from dial up to cable and now I am sooo freakin' spoiled! I can't ever go back! I go to my mom's and use her computer...she has dial up and it's just awful to me now! LOL

Michele, Comcast is our ISP, and it gives us free anti-virus, spyware/firewall, and privacy protection services by McAfee. All I had to do was download all the software. It shows me a log of people/other computers trying to get into my computer during the day. It also automatically updates the anti-virus protection. The privacy protection won't let my son online unless he has my permission (after which I type my password in a dialog box.) Does your ISP provide such services? I know there are tons of software out there but I've always gone with McAfee (just habit), even before we switched to Comcast from AT&T dial-up a long time ago. Of course, I had to pay for the software then.

Pinky,

Thanks for all the good info. I'm going to show your post to my DH.

I don't know much about what we have because my husband set it up. I think we had to get something different than what Time Warner offered because of some problem it caused with his link up to the hospital computer system. It's really pretty cool. He can look at MRI scans, xrays, lab work--you name it--all from our home computer. He used to have to go back into the hospital to do that. What will they think of next! Anyway, there was something with the Time Warner stuff that interferred with this link up. I am a hopeless moron when it comes to computer stuff. I really should take a class.

Thanks again.

Michele:)

Isn't it awesome? We've had DSL for several years now (my DH is a computer engineer who works from home), but I still remember the old dial-up days with horror. I bet you will be posting A LOT more now! :D

My personal favorites

Antivirus---- Norton Antivirus (not the whole suite, just the antivirus)
Firewall---- ZoneLabs' ZoneAlarm the free download one works fine
Spyware--- I run 2 Lavasoft's Adaware and SpyBot Search and Destroy, both are free for the download.

I check for updates on the spyware and antivirus once per week.

Dave

Thanks Dave! We have exactly the same protection except for the firewall. I'm not sure what program we use for that. Well, I feel better knowing that we use the same stuff as a bonified computer geek (I mean that in the kindest way;) )
