First of all, thank you for all for the recommandations. I did order the Johnny G Spinner -- the one that you guys said was good -- and my husband just finished to put it together! It looks AWESOME.
I'll be Easter Spinning tomorrow! YIPPEE!

PS. The things that make me happy... spinning bike, new med ball... :) Mari

tell me tell me more about your spining at home. how do you do this without an instructor? Are there video tapes to coach you?
I was just talking to an instructor today about how to start this. They go mad fast in there. So much they are checking, your head down, how your foot is on the pedal, when you stand, sounds like a blast.

If I can get into that, I won't have to sell my bike.

Edited to add: Do you know the name of the piece of equipment that will make a street bike able to be used as a spinning bike?

The part that lifts it off the floor. I found some DVDs but need to know the name of that part to find it on the net.

Please keep us posted how you like your bike! My birthday is in the summer and I've asked for a spinning bike! I've been looking at the RevMasters so I'll be curious how your Johnny G works for you!

Happy Easter!

Jo

Well, tomorrow will be the first lesson. The bike came with 4 dvds. They LOOK very good, I can hardly wait to try them.
I bought a few different dvds not that long ago -- Jay Blahnik's spinning tape is a definite winner but I'm not that sure if I like Robert Sherman's . I used these tapes on my stationary bike, of course without any lifting. So it will be a lot of fun to do actual spinning tomorrow. I'll let you know guys.

Tytbody, this is what you want for your bike at home?

thank you macska? wish the name would show up when we reply:( sorry.

yes, that is so cool. Thank you.

I'm a bit excited to think I can spin in my home so forgive me if I ask too many questions.

Do I need to take a spin class to learn how to adjust the bike for spinning.? Is it different then riding a bike? the adjustments that is?

Have you heard of Spinervals DVDs for spinning?
do you know of a beginner dvd/video to recommend?

TyTbody,

Yes, you should take a spinning class so that you can learn the safety issues with the bike, and to just get used to spinning. Yes, the adjustments are much different than a regular bike. The height of your seat is very important, too low or too high can cause some serious issues..esp with your knees...most people tend to ride too low in their seat.

Once you have done some classes and feel comfortable with the bike and the workout, then would be the time to buy a spinning bike for at home use. Once you get used to the profiles that the instructors use then you can simulate the workout at home, all you need is some PUMPING music to get you going!!!

If you want to try a spinning class, your local gym should have them available..they almost always have a beginners class for the newbies.

Just remember to wear some bike shorts(they have padded bike shorts) and get yourself a padded gel seat, and wear a good pair of crosstrainer shoes and bring a towel..cause your gonna sweat like you never have before!!! LOL

Macska: Congrats on getting your very own spinning bike!! Yeah!!! You are going to love your Johhny G Spinner bike! You go girl!!!

Spinning is a blast!!

:) ;-) :D :p :9 :7 :+

Well Mari! HAPPY EASTER to YOU! How exciting. Let us know how that first spin goes. http://www.coolgifs.de/sport/biker.gif

Oh boy, you've unleashed more anxiety in me. When I used to ride my bike, I would listen to that music and act like I was in a race. I tried standing but then sat down quickly. LOL. more equipment? That's another $200 or more. Ya .. I best take the classes at the place I work. I work at Healthworks giving massage and when I see those women come in there before and after class, is like non other. They come running to the desk to get their ticket. It's what is called a ticketed class because there will be no more bikes. Well, that class goes like hot cakes.

So the shorts and the shoes aren't just fot show??? how about new pedals also? Need them too???? What do the shorts do for you?

Hello Ladies

Spinning rocks!:)

I did the first 30 min DVD today, and it was an awesome workout. I did it with my hr monitor, the top was 170ish the average was 160-163 which is my aerobic treshold, and it felt like just that zone.
First of all, there are very clear instructions in a booklet and also in a dvd how to set up the bike to avoid potentional knee (in my case hip) problems. These instructions are so detailed that you really don't need to participate in a class to get the idea. I did one class in the past, but I got more help from the dvd than from the old class.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the 3 dvds that came with the bike -- those are all 45 min or longer.

The dvd was good, though - as of now - it is still Jay that I like the most.

I'm very happy with my new spinning things. I also bought a short yesterday -- GOOD IDEA! I have to look into that gel seat cover also.

The bike itself is very sturdy, very small and very easy to handle. It took my DH about 40 min to put it together and he is not a mechanically gifted guy.:) Mari

I bought it on www.spinningtv.com

For the few who were interested in my spinning experiences...

I did Johnny G (himself) 40 min dvd today. He is such an interesting guy! Talking about being positive!:) The workout was not as hard as Jay's but it was almost spiritual -- ok, sort of -- and I'm looking forward to the rest of the dvds. I can see how you can get so hooked on on it.
Tytbody, the short is PADDED. An man, you need that padding. I also bought a gel seat cover today, because I can't stand the pain of the hard seat.:+

Mari~I love Jay's workout too. Mindy Mylrea has a pretty good one too. (I can give you the info on it if you need it.) Also the Spinervals workouts are great. (Some are KILLERS!) Our very own AndreaL from here is in one of them. I think it is called the Red Zone! Whew, it has a couple sections where you get off your bike and do these squat sequences. Talk about thigh BURN. Whewie! Sounds like you are hooked on spinning. Have fUN!

Thanks Debbie. I was actually looking at those red zone tapes. Which one do you like the most? Mari

Wow, spinning at home eh? Wonderful! I love spinning. In fact, the most fit I have ever been is when I mixed Running/spinning/kickbox and Cathe weight tapes...fabulous. Congrats and let us know how you like your new bike. deb:)

Debbie,

Do you enjoy the Spinervals? I know I am not ready for them... I read about them and started panting. ;)

My knees seem to like spinning, so I will be doing a lot more if it. and need variety. I have Precision Cycling, two of Mindy's cycling videos, and Robert Sheman's older video.

Mari!

I only have one of the Red Zone vids. It is: Spinerval 3.0 "Enter the Red Zone" and I like it a LOT! The team on the vid is all Video Fitness gals! (AndreaL, NancyC, Mel, Suzanne and others) I also have a couple other Spinervals: I like both of them: "Muscle Breakdown" and "Suffer-O-Rama". I know S-O-R is a 45 minute interval workout. I haven't done them for awhile but remember that I like them both. Maybe Andi can jump on here and give you some better ideas. She is THE SPINNING pro! Have FUN with your new bike.

Autumn and TyTbody!

Yes, I LOVE the Spinerval workouts. I think all the workouts can be "modified" just by loosening the tension on your bike or just spinning slower when needed. Coach Troy has a way of pushing you when you need it but you can modify if neccesary.

I wouldn't say I'm a spinning expert, but just a few thoughts:)

You will get used to the seat. I use a very thinly padded bike short (tri shorts). I have more problems with the crotch area than the sit bones though.

You don't need the clipless pedals. Once you get into spinning you may want to add them, along with shoes to clip in. I love my pedals and shoes, but regular pedals work fine too!

I am of course biased when it comes to Spinervals. Debbie is right that you can just loosen your tension or take a longer break. When I first started doing them I couldn't last through some of the work sets and definitely couldn't last through the standing ones!

The newer Spinervals have a tension guide on the TV as well as a gearing guide if you are riding a bike on a trainer. The Spinervals ABB's are lower intensity, but kind of boring IMO. You might try one of those and one of the harder ones. Lean & Mean is a fitness series Spinerval and is somewhere in the middle.

Have fun! Spinning is a great high instensity, low impact workout.

Andrea

I went spinning, I guess I didn't post it here but it was such a blast, I'm looking on the scedule for the next class. I love to ride. Did I tell you ??? I love to ride. it was awesome.Like being on a summer ride,I happened to be right near the fan and it was an evening ride, lights were low and it was summer time.... just hurt the heck out of my crotch. Not my sits bones, not my butt, the garden.
