It's all in his mind......

My hubby just can't stay away from sugary drinks. He doesn't drink alot of sugary drinks like I use to, but he claims that when he drinks a diet soda, he does not get any salvia so he goes for a regular soda (34 grams of sugar +). I don't remember this happening to me from switching over to diet. Now, he jumps back and forth from sugar to non and it frustrates me seeing him do this.
Anyone else heard of this happening?

I used to be a total 7Up junkie. I mean, I lived on this stuff as if it was my lifeblood. And I absolutely hated the aftertaste from diet sodas.

But when I finally was determined to make the switch, after about 2 weeks my taste buds made the switch & now it's regular soda that tastes funny to me.

So, I think you're right--a lot of this stuff is psychological.

You mean it makes his mouth dry? I've never heard of that.

I really feel for you, Charlotte. I struggle with DH's eating habits, too. But sugary drinks are the worst. I honestly believe that they are one of the primary causes of obesity in America. It's so easy to mindlessly slurp down hundreds of empty calories per day that you don't even think of as food. But it's so hard to tell someone else what to eat. He may just have to see his waistline expand before he can realize the error of his ways.

Nancy,

My DH has shoulder problems right now and use to workout with my son and I think watching and knowing that the rest of us here, besides my daughter who wears size 0's, are all working out...that makes him depressed so I think right now he is just not motivated until he gets his shoulder issue resolved. He went to a chiropractor which did wonders for his neck, but just made his shoulder worse.
Anyhow, I don't get it when he says he has to have sugar or he will just dry up and die somewhere. LOL! Anyhow, just think he needs to decide for himself what he wants to do, I can't make that decision for him though it kills me to see him like this right now. I am sure it will pass.
Sorry, hope I didn't go on too much.

Cakebaker, you remembered! I'm really impressed!!:D
I suppose I should be fair and admit that he has improved since he met me. He always has at least one vegetable at dinner, he's been eating a lot more salads, and I've got him taking fish oil tablets.

Charlette, what I've found is that it helps to remember to compliment them and notice when they make even small improvements. They respond much better to that than to criticizing (which is definitely my tendency :-( )

But, yes, definitely, as we all know, it is all in your hubby's mind about needing the sugar. He's just going to have to realize it for himself, and that probably won't happen until his shoulder is better. Can't expect him to make any changes while he's frustrated and in pain, poor thing.

Some people just can't get into diet pop. My mom always complained about its aftertaste, which I couldn't detect. I actually prefer the taste of diet over regular.

Maybe you could get him on the new reduced sugar Pepsi? I hear it's quite good.
