IT BAND Has anyone beat it?

Cathlete
Here's my history. Started running in 1993, mostly to burn extra fat. Kept up with aerobics, mostly step. Weights some days, no consistency though. Had three babies, Jan 1999, Feb 2000, Mar 2001. Age 35.

Race history: Sept 2003 (10K), Sept 2004 (1/2 marathon and 10K), June 2005 (marathon) and Sept 2005 (10K). Now, it's not really about burning extra fat. I am completley addicted to any movement. I love the high and the feeling of a tough workout! Like many others here I'm sure!!!

Injuries: Severe back pain after first baby in 1999, from overdoing a tae bo workout. Training for that crazy marathon: throbbing on the right heel. Anyway, about a month after the marathon I was on a 10 mile run and at about 9 my outside leg felt like it was going to collapse. I know, I probably should have rested longer but the high was still there, I felt strong, I just had to run! Now, I have had this leg problem ever since. I did manage to run that 10K last year, and I'm about a month and a half away from another 10K I so desperately want to run. About 6 weeks ago, I had tingling/tightning all the way down my leg, in the calf area, around the front. Had it x-rayed and didn't show anything. Rested, went on vacation, felt good. Did a hi/lo aerobics class, and started feeling it again. BTW, is side stepping, grapevine, shuffling causing it to flare up? Or just impact?

Right now, lo impact aerobics, roller blading and biking seem not to bother my leg. JUST RUNNING! I've tried the outdoor track, walking 10-15 min for warm-up, then slowly jogging, but after about 2 miles in, I start to feel the discomfort. I'm thinking it's it- band. Is there anything else you all can suggest besides the stretches, yoga, and glute, outer thigh work? Should I be working heavier weights for these muscles and just do lighter weights for quads, inner thigh? Should I omit the standing lunges, squats and just use the machines for awhile (leg press, leg curl, lighter quad extension?) I feel really strong in my quads, in fact nearing the end of the marathon, the only discomfort was the back of my legs, mostly behind the knees and hamstrings. Is step a bad thing to do with this problem? Or should I omit everything for 6 weeks or longer??? (you know that would kill me!!!) Sitting at the computer isn't the best either, starts to feel tight in the leg.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

These are words you don't want to hear, but you have to stop running for a while in order to allow the ITB to heal. I recommend a visit to an orthopod, who can refer you for some physical therapy. There, you will learn exercises and stretches for the IT band in order to prevent future injuries. When you return to running, do so conservatively. If you run on the road, make sure you switch sides (cambered roads are a major culprit in these kinds of injuries). At the first sign of a twinge, stop running! The worst thing you can do is to run through any pain.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I am so scared I'll be cursed for life now. How long of a break? Shall I still do other workouts or rest completely???

I have IT band a few times. Definitely quit running and see a Physical Therapist. You will get over it...:)...you can still do cardio but not anything that hurts it! The Nordic Track worked great for me during my IT band injuries...Sarah has some good stretches so maybe she will see this thread and post some advice too...

I could just cry. I'll try a Physical Therapist. How long did your injuries last? I just did Bryan Kest's Long Slow and Deep CD. My legs are tingling, I feel the healing going on. What a great series of stretches. No music, a little bit annoying, but love the feeling. I hope Sarah or anyone else can share too.

Thanks everyone.

I first had it about 10 years ago when I was running 40 miles a week. The best description I have is that is feels like an ice pick going through the side of your knee. That pain seemed to radiate up the side of my leg into my hip and down into my calf. I learned the exercises, slowed down on running and took anti-infamitories. Now when I feel it coming on, I stretch more, vary activities and it seems to work. I now have a flare up about once a year, but I also only run about 10- 15 miles a week now.

Check out my picture trail for some stretches to add to your everyday. There is one in particular...one leg back, other leg in front, bent 90 degrees with the outside of the knee heading towards the floor...Bryan Kest does it and calls it "pigeon pose" or "runners stretch". That gets into my hips so perfectly, and stretches the band like nothing else I have ever done!

Yes those stretches feel really good. I even hear the crackling. Sarah, great marathon, great pics, fantastic time. I lost my 4:00 goal at about 3/4 of the way or so. It's all a blur now. Ended with 4:47 (Grandma's in Deluth) I so wanted to run Twin cities next year. I hope this is still a reality. Is there a group of Catheites who have met at a marathon before?

While I can certainly understand and relate to your desire to have a time goal when running a marathon, I hope you are still extremely proud of your accomplishment!!! Running a marathon is no easy task...at all! Fun, yes...but so challenging! The training alone should have you very proud!

I know some ladies have met up at various races around the country...here and there. I am hoping to meet a Cathe-ite or two at the Columbus Marathon. After that, I am planning on running the Boston Marathon with toughYrun (Elaine)....we just need to qualify first (tiny technicality).

If there are any Cathe-ites doing any big races around me, I hope they let me know! I'd love to meet them! Even if I am not running it, I would love to go cheer them on!

Wendy Marie...we do have a runners or cheetah check in here (in the Check-ins and Challenges) and you are very welcome to join us...:)...all different levels of runners and some of us are trying for a GTG, maybe not for a run. I personally would love to run a marathon with a Catheite, but no one wants to do Big Sur in CAL...:)

Oh no, not another set of threads to read! Hee hee! Ok I'll join in periodically. Can I be a "cheetah wanna-be runner, fast walker for now"? See you there!
