Is this normal? And who should I listen to?

Ladies I have been going to PT for about 3 or so weeks. There are two PT's and a couple of PTA's. Each time I went I saw a different one to take care of my foot. Well I have been told by them when stretching do not go to the point of pain. Cause Wednesday it was hurting so I couldn't stretch all together. Well on my appt.yesterday I got this new girl who was doing the massaging and telling what stretches to do. When I was doing heel lowering it hurt at a certain point and told her I couldn't do it. She said to still hold it there that even though it hurts, it won't get well if I don't keep it there. And she walked away. what is that about? That's not what I have been told! Suppose I get her again? She was really nice person, but it didn't do my foot any good. Late last night my foot started swelling and it was hurting. It has been swollen before but it was worse than it ever has been. And she also when massaging me she would dig deep into the tendon and boy it hurt! None of the others did like that! What should I do if I get her again?

Sorry so long!

go to the foot doctor tuesday and I don't need my foot any worse. (I want to get out of this d*mn boot cast!

On ANY work out vid I have ever done I have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS heard when stretching the words "NO PAIN"! This girl has got to be giving you bad advice I would think.

Can you request that you NOT get her anymore??

As a paying patient you definitely have the right to refuse to be seen by her and to request an alternative therapist. I would exercise that right immediately. Tell them that after treatment by her your foot swelled and was more painful than ever before. That should alert them, because these are not good signs.

You do not have to withstand her anymore. You have rights: exercise them!

Gosh Kim, Is this the same achilles tendon injury you've been suffering with for months? If it is then why hasn't it healed yet? I had a strained achilles tendon once and with about two weeks of good rest and 1 week of a prescribed anti-inflamatory it got better. I feel for you.

Elaine, I wish I knew the answer to that one! It started in May and I didn't go to a doctor till mid June. He turned out to be a dummy after only one visit. He said ice and take motrin and see me next week. I found out that he didn't know what he was doing. So I didn't go to a doctor again until mid Aug. This time I went to a highly recommended doctor. Yes I pretty much didn't take care of it for almost four months. I was just stubborn! Now that I doing what I'm supposed to, it is being slow to do anything. I have been in this boot cast almost 6 weeks. I have to stand on my foot with this boot on and it hurts the heel almost everyday. I will put my sneakers on in the car and it feels tight probably from swelling. And I don't know why the doctor didn't prescribe some anti-inflamatory pills. I ask the PT why the doctor didn't and he said they tend not to want to do that anymore. who knows!

I know four years ago when I had PF in the same foot they gave me anti-inflammatory for it and it was gone in a week. So I don't know why they are treating this diffrently.

Sounds like a graduate of Hella's House of Pain, to me. I would tell her that your foot hurt like you know what and swelled like it never has. She is outnumbered by her colleagues here. I may also call the head PT first thing on Monday and let them know what happened and that you don't want her again if what she is doing is incorrect.

I really hope that you heal soon! I have been feeling so bad for you! I say we all gang up on her and kick her butt, KPC style!

Some people might describe the discomfort or tension of a deep stretch as pain, and maybe that's what she was thinking you meant. That definitely does NOT excuse her, and especially her walking away! The pain and swelling you experienced seem to be an indication of doing too much and causing irrtation.

For myself, I try and go right up to the point of "resistance", beyond which, for me, is "pain". I think Kathryn's right and resistance is often named pain for some people.

You definitely need to speak with someone at the PT's. You need to alert them that this one was not effective for you and in fact felt like a setback. You can make it a 2-minute phone call. Don't worry about offending anyone, since you're actually offering constructive criticism which will help all her future patients.
