Is STS for me??

Pcramer

Cathlete
This is my first post here at C. Nation.

I am not new to exercise, but have just recently increased the intensity of my workouts. I am 45 years old, 5' nothing, 157 pounds and about 24%-25% BF. I am looking to drop about 10% BF, and I would like to maintain as much of my LBM as possible.

Do you think STS would work for this or should I stick with a more cardio based approach??

Thanks!!

You and I are nearly the same measurements! I don't own STS, but I would like to some day (I'm hoping DH will get it for me for Christmas), but as I understand it, it's very intense. I think that anyone can do it as long as they use the weights that are right for them, but when I do it, I want to be ready to lift really heavy. Before I start it, I'm going to do a rotation of Slow & Heavy and CLX to prepare my body. Do you have Slow & Heavy? If you're just stepping it up from an intermediate status, I'd suggest it. It's really really great. Good luck!!

IMO, to burn off the fat and maintain LBM you will benefit the most from both cardio and weights.

The STS program is solid, Cathe and her team have built something that anyone can do. All you need to do is the 1rep max tests, get your equipment together and start. You can build from any where you are in the fitness spectrum. Obviously you need to train smart, and train safe, but you do not need a weight lifting program to prepare you for STS.

Good luck, and get started.:)

Nice to meet another shortie!!

I have not done Cathe at all. Kind of shied away from any intense exercise until recently  Geesh, no wonder I wasn't getting anywhere...lol

Right now I am doing Barry's BootCamp Academy Series, which is tough, but I "know" I need to do more serious weights. I am slightly nervous since I tend to gain muscle by just thinking about it, just wish I could loose fat the same way!!

Thanks for the suggestions!!

Well that is good news to hear!! I keep reading about a 3-month rotation and a 6-month rotation. Could you tell me the difference between the two?

Thanks!

I personally feel the longer rotation is better. You repeat each week twice. It gives you two weeks to get the weight right and extra time to build strength as the program progresses.

It's a great program!

I love weight training and enjoy the STS series. I HATE cardio. But to lose weight I need to do the STS rotation and some cardio every day. I'm 5yrs older, 4" taller and 20# heavier than you and have only had to modify the STS for my knee problem. I was blown away that I started benching 40# and using the 25# dumbbells for my back.

Once I drop another 30# you finally will be able to see my great arm muscles I'm building.

If you are not a fan of weight lifting then I would say stick with the cardio weight based workouts.

Well thanks for everyone's replies. I can now see the STS is definitely in my future!! Now if I can just get past the fear of bulking  I will be fine!!

Love weight training and cardio is something I have come to live with. Loving bootcamp style workouts so that helps in that department for sure. Combine the above with BFFM and I think I am good to go!!!

Many thanks again!!
