Is my daughter getting migraines???

My youngest, only 7, has this scenario about once a month: she complains that her head hurts, about 20 minutes later her stomach hurts, then she throws up, then she curls up on her bed w/the lights out for like 12 hours. This has now happened enough times that I'm going to take her to the doctor, as I think it could be migraines. Does anyone have migraines (or know someone who has them) and do these symptoms seem familiar???

Oh..I use to suffer when I was her age with migraines. And I think they stopped when I was about 12 or so! I would be out playing with my friends and the next thing you know, I would be sick and my mother would put me in a completely dark room. And I would be there until morning. The light would hurt my eyes so bad!
She even had to change the blinds in my bedroom so no light would creep in.I wouldn't even know what time of say it was.
It was the worst b/c I could still hear my friends playing outside.
My DD has headaches here and there and if I don't get something in her as soon as she feels it comming on, she ends up sick as well.
Take her to the doc and get something for it.Unless you want to check into it more.I also make DD drink more water then she use to.

It definitely sounds like migraines to me. Just out of curiosity, does your daughter suffer from car sickness?

Michele

She's usually fine in the car, as long as we're in our SUV. Both my girls hate being in the back of our VW.

Hi Delfin!

My oldest son started having migraines at the age of 3. At the time we had no idea what the problem was, but because of the headaches he became a preschool dropout:eek::eek:! He would complain that his head hurt, he was photosensitive, and it always involved vomiting. We would send him to bed, with a bucket bedside, and keep the room as dark as possible.

We eventually took him to his pediatrician who in turn sent him to a neurologist for a thorough work up. The diagnosis was migraines and it was so hard to watch him go through all that pain and not be able to do anything.

I would recommend taking your daughter to her pediatrician. My son eventually had to take preventative meds at about the age of 9. The good news is that he has outgrown them.

One more thing I wanted to add.Is my DD use to feel better after she threw up.Does yours? I was ages trying to figure out if she was allergic to something. We narrowed it down to aspertame. And now she won't drink anything thats diet:)

Thanks, I'm going to take her to the Ped. It just breaks my heart to see her like this -- she's usually such an upbeat, lively kid.

I was just curious because kids that have a problem with car sickness often have migraines as well. I had migraines as a kid and they presented the same way as your daughter's. I was very sensitve to light and smells and always vomited with them. Sleeping was the only way to get rid of it. There are great medicines for migraines now that can relieve a headache very quickly. I think setting up an appointment with your doctor is a good idea. They know so much more about migraines now than they did when I was a kid. I hope your daughter finds relief soon.

My son gets migraines and has since your daughters age. He also gets motion sickness. He is now almost 18 and still struggles with them. My daughter used to get abdominal migraines, but has outgrown them. Definately see if you can get a referral to a pediatric neurologist.

A mixture of Benydryl and Tylenol can help. I got that tip from a pharmicist friend.

Please make sure your pediatrician looks into both her eyes with an ophthalmoscope...better yet, regardless of what the pediatrician says, make an appt to see an ophthalmologist who can do a thorough exam of her eye grounds and her vision after she gets dialated. Her symptoms do sound like migraines, but it could be something much, much more serious. They may order an MRI of her head, so don't be alarmed by that. If they don't order one, I'd want to know why they didn't. If it turns out that her diagnosis is migraines, you might want to see a pedi neurologist who will be current on the latest treatements.

Please let us know how things turn out, and good luck

Some migranes can be a result of a magnesiium deficiency. I have been supplementing for a couple of years now and have hardly any migranes.

Also, hormones may be a cause. Since your daughter is so young,
I'm not sure if that could be the case; but I would check with her
doctor. Hormones can cause a lot of health problems.

Food sensitivities can also be a culprit. Food additives such as
Sulfites, MSG, Nitrates, etc. Diet can play a big roll in how we feel. Also, chemical and environmental sensitivities can be a cause (Diesel smoke, household cleaning supplies, etc.)

I hope you can help your daughter with her problem. Migranes are
so painfully excruciating.

Good Luck,

My daughter started getting migraines when she was 5. As soon as she starts getting a "baby headache", we give her Motrin before it can turn into a migraine. She tends to get them a lot when we're in the car, but the first couple times were at home. She was sensitive to light, sound and just slept for hours. So far her doctor hasn't prescribed anything stronger, and so far she hasn't needed it.

Get her to a Dr.
At her age there could be something seriously wrong.
I had them for 20 yrs after an epidural.
They just now finall lightened upto 1 every 4-6 weeks. Usually monthly time.
Her hormones should not be kicking in at 7.
MAke them CT Scan her!!!!!!
She is tooo young for headaches.
I don't want to scare you , but better safe than sorry.
Yes these sound like migranes.
I Hope she is Ok.
