Is it really that funny???

I think of myself as a somewhat "regular" around here and just wanted to say to those who are making light of the egg controversy that I find that very hurtful. I've read(and somtimes contributed to),the<---thread but today everyone in that thread seems to be making light of an issue that I find offensive and I'm sure others would agree. I understand disagreeing on subjects and discussing them. I even enjoy discussing issues that seem controversial, but I take offense when we make fun of one side or the other. To make light of an issue that others find important(be it human rights, religion, animal rights, or racial issues),is NOT cool. And to be clear, eggs ARE an animal rights issue and to many of us it is not funny or something to be made light of.
Just my observation and my opinion but I felt like I wanted to voice it.

This sort of issue is very similar to the one that made LauraMax decide to leave the forum. I think that people feel free to comment, sometimes rudely, without thinking about what they're saying simply because they don't have to face the person or people they're "talking" to. When this happens, threads like the one about eating eggs simply get out of hand and turn into an insult match.

That's what I find "amusing." How quickly a good, solid and potentially thought-provoking discussion can turn into a fight.

I think topics like this one, and many others that have been posted here, can offer all of us a chance to explore new avenues and learn new things. Yes, some of that learning can even include how to be more open-minded.

I hope that we can take these new ideas and really discuss them meaningfully.

Now then, anybody want to yell at me? ;)

I couldn't have said it better myself Shannon. I certainly don't mind discussing things, but once people start making fun of issues, then it starts to cross the line to rudeness and thoughtlessness.
I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but those posts actually hurt my feelings and I felt very isolated. I know this is just a message board but I would hope that we would have more respect for eachother than to do something like that. I would like to add that I respect many (if not all) of you who post here. I enjoy reading and learning from all of you and I didn't start this thread to start a fight.
Now, yell away!!:)

That's why people create those things. To horrify people. But think about it. Everyone knows that eggs turn into baby birds, yet we've eaten eggs for ... okay, a lot longer than mere centuries. It's just another way of showing that particular reality. Humans DO eat other animals. Some of us choose not to, but basically we're omnivorous creatures.

I'm not trying to knock any ethical implications. I chose not to eat meat a long time ago for ethical reasons, and I continue that way for what I believe are good health reasons, as well.

It's just that images like that one are designed to stir up the emotions, and they very often turn off people's logical thinking. I think we're all smart enough here to look beyond that, and if we want to, to discuss the value or lack of it, of eating an egg. Or whatever else pops up on this board.

Carolyn, we were just engaging in a little light hearted banter, that's all. My gosh, do we really have to be so careful about everything we say? I can only speak for myself, but I never intended to offend anyone, just engage in a little play on words to blow off steam--nothing more. ;)

Thank you for that Michele. I must be having a bad day or something because I'm usually not so easily upset by stuff but somehow this got to me. I'm not mad at the ladies who post on the <--- thread, so please no one stop posting there(Shelley!!), I must be a bag of emotions today so I apologize for that. I'm actually a level headed person if you can believe it!;-)

I read the thread earlier on this and I feel that although everyone is entitled to their views...the original poster wanted to know if she should eats eggs with yolks because of the fat content and she did not ask if anyone thought it was unethical to eat eggs. Nobody who chooses to eat eggs should be directed to a site with horrifying images.

Carolyn, I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt. I can understand how you felt but also understand how the gals were just having fun with a play on words. Hope you feel better now. Most people here would never want to hurt anyone intentionally. Again sorry you were hurt and glad you feel better! http://www.aoe3paradise.com/images/smilies/grouphug.gif

I had a whole post on this but deleted it and just decided to say if I have at any time insulted or hurt someone on this board, I apologize (except to one person and situation wherein I am thrilled that I said what I said. Has nothing to do with the Great Egg Controversy of February, 2006 :p) I've been known to post before I think sometimes!

hugs to all!!!

Pixie...and I quote...

"cross the line to rudeness and thoughtlessness."

THAT is exactly what your friend Katheryn did yesterday by posting that link to the thread in question. And I hope she reads this because I write nothing on the internet that I would not say to person standing right in front of me.

You see, all Katheryn accomplished yesterday was to show that she is a thoughtless and rude person. She and you may think posting photos like that is 'getting your point across', well I beg to differ. Quite honestly I do not understand why someone would even want to perpetuate photos like that. You claim to be an animal rights supporter...so explain to me how is it okay by your standards for someone to even make those photos in the first place? I liken it to child pornography. Anyone who would pass along grosteque images like Katheryn did is a weirdo. She is no different than the guy who says he isn't a child molestor yet he has a hard drive full of child porn images. What kind of person keeps images like that at the ready? No, my opinion of Katheryn went into the toilet after her rude and extremely offending display yesterday.

She did absolutely nothing to further the cause of animal rights. She did much to ruin her reputation here.

I also find it funny that you are so upset. You had no sympathy what-so-ever yesterday for Colleen who posted the original question in the first place. I hope both you and Katheryn are adult enough to apologize to her.

Nuff said.

Hi 40something,
"Katheryn" spells her name without the e. It's Kathryn. Thanks for spelling my name correctly though.:)

Look, I'll my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth. Yes, I enjoy the banter and having fun at topics that sometimes either frustrate, horrify, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes I think I cannot believe some things that get posted and I think, at least for myself, sometimes it is an outlet. Really it is not meant to offend...I merely insinuated that it was silly to be arguing over egg yolks. Really, it is silly to be arguing over a lot of the topics I see. That is my own opinion, though. Some like egg yolks, some do not,and I have absolutely nothing against the original post. I do, however, think it was unneccessary to post that link, whatever your viewpoint might be...and I'm not arguing anyone's viewpoint. Kathryn said she was sorry and that be that. I agree no need to attack anyone at all. I am also one who enjoys the diversity and many different viewpoints on here. I think we can all learn a great deal from one another.

I've waited to respond to this whole issue, but Debbie really hit the nail on the head for me. I really do appreciate Kathryn's responses on the other thread, too. We can all go into grocery stores that sell eggs and either purchase some or pass them by. Either way, I'd hate to think that decision alone makes us either speak with someone or not!!

Thanks Debbie, and thanks for everyone's comments when they are constructive and intended as such.

What I have noticed lately is a literal pushing of the vegan way of eating. I was tickled yesterday when I was reading a thread (I think it was a vegan cookbook) that pretty much was trying to talk Shelley into becoming a vegan. I noticed Shelley was very diplomatic in her answers :) but I think I also noticed a hint of irritation. I don't blame her.

We are all adults. As long as it doesn't hurt another human being, we should be allowed to live the lifestyle we choose without others trying to shove their way of living down our throats.

Whoops! I just posted a thread of a vegan recipe book. No offense intended as I do eat meat. But it's nice to take a break every now & then & I wanted to share it with others.;-)
