Is is normal to stop periods at 39?

Does anybody know if it's normal to stop having periods at 39? I suppose it is but just wanted to talk to someone else that stopped at my age. I know it's silly - I should be glad to not have to worry about periods but for some reason I feel sorta sad that that part of my life might be over. I have a 9 year old and didn't want any more kids so I'm not concerned about fertility. I was at the ob-gyn back in May and not due to go back till next May. I don't think I have any medical problems, at least I didn't 7 months ago or the doc would have probably found it then. Should I schedule an appt. with the ob-gyn or just not worry about it? Anybody else stop this early?

Was anybody else sad when their periods stopped?
Thanks
Lisa

I am 44 and have not stopped yet, but I think this is a very individual thing. If I were you, I would schedule an appointment with the ob-gyn. One, just to get checked out and make sure there is nothing else going on. Two, to get advise on this next phase of your life.

Also, try to find out when your mother and grandmother stopped.

I think 39 is too young for most women. I'm 38 and have had problems with my period for my whole life and I have to go on meds to get my periods if I go too long without one. My doctors don't want me to go longer than 2-3 months without a period because the uterine lining needs to be shed.

I would definitely go to the doctor and have things checked out. They can do some bloodwork to measure your hormone levels and see what's going on. They could also do an ultrasound on your reproductive organs as well.

Hi Lisa,

I'm going through a similar situation. I just went to my Dr. this week and he had my blood drawn to test for hormone levels etc... I don't know too much about what could be happening, but I would say it's worth a try to check with your doctor.

Hi Lisa,

I stopped early, but then, I had a long history of ovarian dysfunction and spent years trying to get pregnant with no results:-( .

How long has it been since your last period? I didn't just stop all at once. The perimenopause phase lasted for several years. If I were you I would probably call the doctor and tell them what's going on. I always like to err on the side of caution.;)

Lisa, most women do not stop at 39. Please call your doctor and tell her what's going on. She will tell you whether you need to come in for another visit. If you look at the statistics, you will see that the average age range for the onset of menopause is between 48 and 55.

HTH,
Nancy
